- AI Resources So I looked into those websites and code examples. They're some pretty solid resources, but I also want to pick up a book to get expert advice in one concise location. I narrowed it down to two books: Game Programming Gems and Game Programming AI by Example ( AI game programming wisdom looked good, but not as good as the other two). Considering books are $30+, I'm trying to narrow it down to one. - XML data file becoming corrupt for no apparent reason For reasons I can't explain, my game sometimes throws an exception when trying to load my XML game save data on 360. It seems to become corrupted randomly. I have to recode the game to delete and recreate the file. - Strange DX9 vertex glitch Ok, didn¡¯t get that. Maybe it¡¯s not just a single problem what it¡¯s causing this error: If it¡¯s not somethind "machine-related", it¡¯s in your software. It can be two kind of things: 1.- There¡¯s a very basic problem: related to video drivers, DX version or incompatibilities in every machine you tested, what I find very unprobable, or, 2.- There¡¯s somethind wrong in your software. This kind of distortions can be due to: 1.- If using fixed function pipeline: the projection matrix 2.- If using programmable shaders: the vertex shader or the projection matrix. 3.- If using post processing: obviously your post-processing system. Try deactivating features, to isolate the problem (switch to fixed function pipeline and deactivate post-processing, for example). - Invisible Skybox Hi Zulbaric: Your code looks like it's from the SkySphereDemo and EarthOrbitDemo that I created awhile ago. At the time, I didn't have the understanding of world coordinates and object coordinates that I do now, and that may be affecting your game. I'd suggest you take a look at this forum topic: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1212376&SiteID=1 . If you're using the camera manager from the demo, the camera looks down the world's Z axis, so -Z is into the monitor. +X is towards the right, +Y is up. The demo assumes (well, it should assume) that with the above orientation of the camera, the ship's nose is pointed towards the right, the ship's top is pointed at the top of the screen, and the ship's right wing is pointed at you. At the time, I didn't know how the .X processor works- it basically assumes that models coming in use the left-handed coordinate system and it flips the vertices around. I use Caligari trueSpace 7.11 to create my models, and based on my experiments, to get the model oriented the way I want, the model's +X axis points towards its tail, its +Y axis points towards its right wing, and its +Z axis points towards its top. If I do that, and then export the model using left-handed coordinates, then it appears the way I want. If you go to http://www.spellflight.com/GameModes/EarthOrbitDemo.zip you'll find the latest demo code. skysphere.x, planet.x, and spacecraft.x models all oriented properly according to the above conventions, and you can use the following controls to orient the ship: W: pitch up. S: pitch down. A: yaw left, unless left-shift key is down. In that case, roll left. D: yaw right, unless left-shift key is down. In that case, roll right. Also, be sure to reset your render states. - Creators Club Benefits Since Xbox lib/classes < Windows lib/classes, your totally sweet game should be able to converted to a totally sweet Windows game pretty easily... On the other hand, it's pretty easy to create "exclusive content" for Windows only. In fact, we have alot of those already... It is an open standard and many 3D applications have FBX exporter/importers. Microsoft have provided an FBX importer so that you can import FBX scenes into the content pipeline. - using 'Resources' hi, thank... I read that article and downloaded the source code... then used it in my application. but the media player is a single entity... kind of 'one-handed'. I'm just learing C# and working on asteroids.... it works fine with Direct X only I but using many instances of the same player amounts to using the same player (I guess I'm getting pointers to the same driver...) so when the alien appears and the siren (siren.wav) goes off you only hear it until the player shoots, then the bullet.wav is heard and ends all sound until the next bullet or crash.... so when you're playing.. you only hear bullets. thanks for the idea, another tool in the tool-belt, but not for this job. What's exactly the message >> I never use function ->SetSamplerState, i use a ID3DXEFFECT object and i do beginpass(0).. your HLSL code contains a sampler definition: sampler2D STextMesh = sampler_state { texture = <TextMesh>; MIPFILTER = linear; MAGFILTER = linear; MINFILTER = linear; }; So ID3DXEFFECT API automaticaly calls SetSamplerState for you whenever it is used. This is because ID3DXEFFECT does not know the current state of the device like you know it. If you want to avoid it, you can remove sampler parameters from the effect file and call SetSamplerState() manually in your code. - XNA GSE Hangs I've checked before, many times, and no problem is ever hogging the resources when this happens. System idle processes takes up 98-99% of my CPU, so it's not any specific program. - Could C# be the future of gaming? Hi Jeff, As some one who is a partner in a company (and lead developer) that produces enterprise high performance security applications, many of them in C#, I think you will be very surprised what you can do with C#. I develop in C++, C++/CLI (.net C++) and C#. C# is my favorite by far. While it certainly takes a lot of care and research to get the "barn burning" speed you can truly get out of C#. Once you know what to avoid and how to write performance critical apps in C#, you will only go back when you have to... Enjoy learning C#, and be sure to grab the "CLR in C#" books by MS press. It will "show you the light" as far as the inner workings of the CLR and how to make your managed code nearly as fast (and in some cases faster) then it's unmanaged counter parts. It certainly helped my apps go from pretty fast to very fast... You already mentioned the "time to market" benefits of the .Net platform so I will simply agree with you and leave it at that. - Displaying a Blender x exported model I create a simple cube in Blender. I assign a uv-mapped texture to it. I create a .x file of the model. I start the XNA tutorial on loading and displaying a model. So far everything goes as expected. The tutorial model displays fine. I copy the model and texture to my game-dir, add the model to the content pipeline. So far, so good. I modify the code to display my model, run the code and there I get confused: The screen is blue. The code is able to find the .x file and to locate the texture. That I have tested. There are no compile errors about the .x file. Furthermore I have the most recent .x file exporter for Blender I could find. I also played with flipping the normals in all ways I could think of. No result what soever. Unfortunately I cannot preview my model with the direct x viewer in the direct x sdk. It crashes on startup. Does somebody know what possibly can go wrong Or can someone tell me how he creates a blender model that is displaying in XNA I've read some posts about issues with Blender. These didn't help me. - No text input in WinForm controls You could use the Form.Show(IWin32Window) override. Pass in a reference to the game form so that your new form is owned by the game form. This wont dock the forms but will enable your form to be minimized/restored and closed with the game form. Personally I quite liked having a separate form, it was more flexible, especially when using two monitors. Also it means that I could make editor components that can be easily added to other games with minimal interference. If you wanted to you could probably add some code to stick your form to the side of the game form and make it move/resize with it. You'd just have to monitor those events in the game form. When and how will be LoadGraphicsContent and UnloadGraphicsContent called I found out that LoadGraphicsContent is called by DrawableGameComponent.Initialize, .DeviceCreated and .DeviceReset and UnloadGraphicsContent by DrawableGameComponent.DeviceDisposing and .DeviceResetting. But i want know when the parameter (un)loadAllContent is set to true or to false. I would argue that Initialize and DeviceCreated will call LoadGraphicsContent(TRUE) and DeviceReset just LoadGraphicsContent(FALSE). - Thanx Well I was going through the first XNA tutorial and then got to the part right before you make the model rotate and I compiled the program and got a nasty little surprise! there was this error in the Could not find a Direct3D device that has a Direct3D9-level driver and supports pixel shader 1.1 or greater. I'm not sure what it is and how to fix it... so yeah and yes I tried searching for the problem but I couldn't find anything about it. And I wasn't sure how to look up my Graphics card to see if it's compatible but yeah my computer is pretty new! - newbie problem with CreateOrthographicOffCenter I dont think I am quite understanding this, I created the following test to try and get a quad to render in screen space Quad quad = new Quad ( new Vector3 (0, 0, 0), new Vector3 (0, 10, 0), new Vector3 (10, 10, 0), new Vector3 (10, 0, 0)); Matrix matView = Matrix .CreateLookAt( new Vector3 (0, 0, 1), Vector3 .Zero, Vector3 .Up); Matrix matProj = Matrix .CreateOrthographicOffCenter(0, ScreenWidth, 0, ScreenHeight, 0.0f, 1.0f); The quad renders in the bottom left corner of the screen, I want it to render in the top left of the screen, I though maybe flipping the Up Vector so its 0,-1,0 would solve the problem and allow me to draw shapes with the origin being the top left of the screen however no matter what I try I cant get it to work. I think the problem is due to my understanding of CreateOrthographicOffCenter, can somebody explain in newbie terms how I can go about acheiving this. I would ask yourself this question: do I want to write games, or do I want to write a game engine Realistically, you will be doing one or the other, but not both (unless the engine complexity is trivial, or 2D) - you simply won't have enough time. There is actually a gulf between the two things, and what motivates people to do one or the other (deep down are you a techie, or a creative person Do you want to create cool effects, or a cool game ). 3D games engines are not easy things to create - although they look that way until you are 9 (full time!) months into developing one, but don't let that stop you having a go and enjoying the journey! I'm new to XNA and I'm using VS2005. I just want to use XNA with VS2005 but it requires C# Express to be installed. That's a waste of disk space if I must install another version on my PC. I have two questions: Can I use XNA with VS2005 And if there is no other way, if I must install C# Express on my PC, will any conflict happens with the Studio version

Yes, C# Express is required to install XNA. You can install C# Express, install XNA, uninstall C# Express and then use XNA with VS2005 but you lose quite a few of the benefits of XNA, primarily the content pipeline.
So if you want to have the full benefits of XNA, you must use it with C# Express. VS2005 runs side by side with C# Express (and all the Express) versions with no conflict. I run with that setup both on a production machine at work and at my home.
This was a design decision by the Microsoft XNA team and in reality has just a minimum impact on those with VS2005 but a major gain to those developer that don't. Here's an article written by the XNA development team from Microsoft that explains this in a bit more detail if you're interested.

However, the download page for C# Express states the following.
"Before installing, you must uninstall any previous Beta, CTP or Tech Preview versions of SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, and the .NET Framework 2.0."
So, you're okay with a full version of them, but not with Beta, CTP or Tech Preview versions

If you don't install the MSDN Help or the database engine, you only need about 50Mb (XNA GSE installs its own help separately)
