We've just converted a large .NET 1.1 service application to .NET 2.0. The solution includes 17 projects. The build progresses roughly the same amount of time as the VS2003 build. But after success or failure, the IDE hangs for 30-45 seconds. There is no additional information sent to the output window, there is no additional information on the status bar, it just hangs, then the final line is sent to the output window:

========== Build: 17 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 up-to-date, 1 skipped ==========

While this is only a few seconds it is very anoying and it always occurs even if we issue a rebuild all with no changes to any file!

  • Is this a known issue and I should just suck it up
  • Is this a know issue and is there a configuration setting that I should change
  • Is there a way to determine what it is doing during that hang

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ben

I would like to concur with this posting. I see the same delay after the "Build succeeded" message in the status bar.

There appears to be a fix for a similar problem if you are using VB, see the Visual Studio 2005 Hot fixes, but nothing has been done for C#.

I get this too but hoping it maybe fixed in SP1. I was trying to figure out why yesterday when I saw your post but I get this too and noticed it before. I thought could be an AV thing but it wasnt. hoping there will be a patch or something in SP1 which is soon to become available

No one has found a work around

it seems, for me, to be fixed in SP1

I've installed SP1 and the problem went away for a while, but it came back.

The problems seems to occur after I open a form to edit, though not always. The problem doesn't go away when I close the form. It does go away if I close the IDE and restart it.

Hi,

I have the same problem which was not resolved by SP1. It doesn't happen on every build, but can lock up VS for several minutes. The build is for a mobile device application - not sure if this makes any difference. It's really slowing down my development progress, so I hope there's a fix coming soon...

Greg

What I normally recommend it the following:

  1. Download and run Process Monitor
  2. Set the filter to devenv.exe in Process Monitor
  3. Start monitoring before you build
  4. Build the solution/project in Visual Studio
  5. After the build stop monitoring in Process Monitor

If the IDE has been inresponsive for seconds or even minutes you will notice big time gaps in the log of Process Monitor. Take a look at the the last thing devenv.exe was doing before the long delay, sometimes you can determine based on the log what the problem is.
