Hi all

I'm running Vista home with VS2005. I have had no issues with the local help which seemed to be working fine for the past couple of months, however, for the past week or so I have been unable to access the local MSDN library docs at all.

If I open help from within VS there is nothing there, no index, no contents, nothing. If I try to open it outside of VS, I get the "Microsoft Document Explorer cannot be shown because the specified help collection 'ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v80.en' is invalid" error.

I've searched the forum here and could not find anything that helps, I've also tried:

  1. Repairing the MSDN install
  2. Re-installing MSDN
  3. Updating to MSDN SP1 library (April 2007 I think) (VS is already at SP1)
  4. Un-installing MSDN
  5. Repairing MS Document Explorer
  6. Uninstalling MS Document Explorer

Each of the above actions fails - the install/repair etc starts ok, gets to the point where the dialog is reporting "Updating component registration" and then just stops and rolls back the install/repair or whatever. The only (useless) message shown is "Setup Not Completed - the wizard was interrupted before MSDN Library 2005 could be completely installed".

I've run out of options now on this so really need some help - I really, really, really don't want to have to uninstall VS and start again as it's going to take me ages to get the dev environment back to where it should be if I have to go down that route.

Any help would REALLY be appreciated - if you need any more info let me know

Thanks in advance

Martin

Re: Developer Documentation and Help System MSDN Documentation (or Dexplorer?) corrupted, can't repair or uninstall - help!

Hi Martin,

I know this is probably not the answer you're looking for, but Visual Studio 2005 allows you to easily export its current settings to a file that you can later import again after it's reinstalled.

Tools > Import and Export Settings...

Import and Export Settings Wizard

Cheers Dave - I'll save that tip for later (once I've managed to sort this issue out).

I think I have made some progress in that the MSDN SP1 install runs through with no reported errors, as does the DExplorer 2005 install. Only trouble now is that no namespaces appear to have been merged (despite the installer saying that it is merging the namespaces while it's installing, just skips past that part very quickly).

So if anyone knows how to re-merge the standard VS MSDN help namespaces I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks again

Martin

Martin, can you enable windows installer logging on the machine, by adding this regkey:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"Logging"="voicewarmup"
"Debug"=dword:00000002

try to uninstall MSDN again and share resulting log file (should be latest MSI*.log in your %temp% folder

Hi Martin,

I hope Maria's suggestion solves the problem.

However, if not...

You haven't mentioned if you've installed the VS2005 Extersions needed for VS2005 to run properly on Vista.

Please take a look at this previous thread on a similar subject:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1287287&SiteID=1

There are several links in my reply to the poster that may help sort the problem.

If it's needed, I hope it helps,

Frank

Hi pritcham,

Hope your problem has been resolved by now but if not you might want to try MSDN installation one more time.

But this time before you reinstall MSDN (make sure you already uninstalled MSDN) I want you to check the following folder. (If you have Visual Studio 2008 Beta 1 or Beta 2 you might see Help 9 folder too)

\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8

This is the folder that dexplorer files are. It's not a recommended way to delete Dexplorer but it worked for me when I want to completely clean up the dexplorer I delete files in this folder and then kick the new installation of MSDN. If you don't have dexplorer at all Setup will copy dexplorer files to your machine again.

Hope this will help.
