Hi all,
I have a problem with TFS about mail notification. I have set the right mail address and smtp server and check the Project Alert, but it doesn't work. It seems the mail cannot be sent out, for I wrote a demo mail sender application in C# and run it with the same smtp server and mail address, it doesn't work on 2003 server , but run well on my VISTA.

the detail exception message is: "The remote name could not be resolved:"smtp.xxx.com""

Does anybody have the same question What should I do for this

Hi Robust Sun,

Can you please check the following

1. Is your SMTP server name is correct and the same you updated in the Web.config

2. Try using IP address of the SMTP server instead of the NAME in the configuration.

3. In 2003 Server, check with FIREWALL settings in the server, Is any VIRUS Scanner on the SERVER is blocking the emails in sending MASS mails to protect from WORMS etc..

4. Verify whether TFS is sending mail or not, check out this blog has good explanation about the TRACING http://blogs.msdn.com/psheill/archive/2005/11/28/497662.aspx

5. Check out the user for the particular TEAM PROJECT has the complete SECURITY and PERMISSIONS to subscribe for the mail alerts.

6. Also, check out my post for setting up and verify the smtp configuration in the web.config file.

Thank your for your help, Kathirvel.

I checked the 2003 server settings. there are no firewall/VirusScanner. And indeed, the wrong message is "the remote name cannot be resolved".Is there anything wrong with the dns but my other systems ( such as VISTA) work well...

ooh..It's really interesting ...then where the problem occurs... Can you please check the following from the SERVER.

1. Login in to the SERVER.

2. Click START -> RUN -> cmd - > this will open the command prompt

3. In the command prompt run the following command, telnet <SMTP IP address> 25

4. If the SMTP is listening then you don't have the problem in accessing the SMTP from the SERVER. if the connection timeout failed...or not listening ..means you have some problem in accessing the same. you can contact your local Network administrator for the access.

I cannot use telnet, for the server even cannot resolve the host name(smtp.xxx.com) to ip address...

for example, i can not ping www.microsoft.com to get its ip on this server.
