I reinstalled my whole damn operating system thinking that I had broken visual studio somehow... it turns out that was a collosal waste of time... I have a fresh clean windows xp pro sp2 install, and a clean Visual Studio Professional...
and whenever I add a dataset to a project, and right-click the designer and hit "View Code", I get this horrifying error:

Failed to view the validation code because of the following error:

Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)

and it gives me a blank document. If I click the button to Save All open documents, the whole damn program just crashes!! I've submitted the error reports, but that's not going to help me fix the problem... what is going on !!! this has never happened before!! I just barely installed visual studio so how in the heck could there be something wrong!!!!! I can't do ANYTHING now!

okay I tried building the application before saving and it didn't crash. but when I try to view code, it now says:

Failed to view the validation code because of the following error:

Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component

The only thing in my solution is the dataset. I am quickly going insane.

i can't be the only person having this problem! I tried making a new project, to see maybe if I did something wrong in how I set up the dataset. I added a new dataset to my project, then added a datatable, and filled in some columns. now when I click Save I got a message saying that

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 has encountered a user-defined breakpoint
A breakpoint in an application indicates a program error. After this dialog is dismissed, the application will continue running, but it may be in an unstable state.

The options are Debug and Close. If I put debug, it tells me Visual Studio needs to close and asks if I want to send an error report. if I put close, visual studio just closes.

What is going on I can't do anything, I can't write any software because as soon as I try to save the whole program goes to hell!!

I tried installing SP1 for visual studio in hopes that it would fix this mess, but no the error is still there!! Why is this happening It has never happened before!!

could it be because I am running this on my new laptop which is a core 2 duo that's the only thing that has changed!! I googled trying to find if that could have caused a problem, but haven't found anything indicating that's it.

please, please help me! I cannot do ANY DEVELOPMENT until this is fixed!!

If this would block me from doing my work the first thing i would do is uninstall it completely and reinstall it or at least try to repair the installation.

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

SelArom

um did I not say that I already did that first I did a complete uninstall of visual studio and sql server 2005, then reinstalled both. same error. then I reformatted my pc, and THE ONLY THING THAT I INSTALLED was Visual Studio 2005 and sql server 2005.

SAME PROBLEM!!

what the hell is going on am I going crazy how can this problem happen again, on a COMPLETELY CLEAN INSTALL, when it has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE

Edit: okay looking over my posts it doesn't look I did actually say that, so I'm sorry if I sounded accusing. sorry, this thing just REALLY has me flustered!!

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

I know how it feels. Here are some more things you can try:

  1. Have you tried a different installation media for the Visual Studio environment. I mean did you burn an img file to a DVD or is it a DVD with scratches on or something
  2. Do you use Registry Cleaners
  3. Have you tried installing Visual Studio without SQL Server 2005
  4. What is the version number of the c:\windows\system32\mscoree.dll file
  5. Enable Visual Studio logging by launching devenv.exe /log. This will create a xml based log file in the following folder:
    %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ActivityLog.xml

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

it is an ISO file I downloaded from my schools msdn subscription. I can't see how it could be a problem with the media...
i have reformatted for the third and final time, and I'm going to try one more time, installing visual studio with sql server express instead. i'll report back when it breaks again :P

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

The ISO can be corrupted. Try installing Visual Studio 2005 without all the other stuff first because now I am reading that you will install SQL Server Express instead of SQL Server.

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

SelArom

i thought about that, but wouldn't it just not work at all if the iso was corrupt damn and I can't even get another copy until next semester because my school only lets us download once :(
and do you mean install visual studio completely but omit sql server express I haven't done the reinstall yet so if anyone has any other advice please let me know

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

Here is how I always install my machine:

  • Install Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista
  • Retrieve all the latest updates from the Microsoft Update site (this includes the .NET Framework versions)
  • Install Visual Studio .NET 2003
  • Install Visual Studio 2005
  • Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

What I recommend you do is download Microsoft Virtual PC and try it there instead of reinstalling your machine everytime:

You can work with a master disk where you install only Windows XP without all the updates. Then you create a new Virtual Machine that uses this master disk as it's base. In this 2nd VM you install all the updates and Visual Studio et al.

this is an intriguing idea, what is virtual pc can you give me more details on why I would want to do this is it slower to develop in a virtual machine vs installing directly to windows
also, I don't use vs 2003 at all anymore

It's a technology of which you will hear more and more of. It's a technology of the near future. It is called Virtualization:

When you use Virtual PC you can create Virtual Machines that simulate a computer environment in which you can install a platform and try out software.

but is it a good idea for someone like me who is not yet a professional what are some of the benefits gained from this this is totally off topic but I like the idea and want to learn more of what it can do from someone who has hands-on experience!

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

SelArom

okay so moment of truth, I did a reinstall of visual studio, clean, full install (including sql server express), with a brand new fresh download of the 2cd iso. installed without a hitch no bugs or errors. First thing I did was make a project, added a dataset, added a datatable, added a column, made it the primary key and saved... no crash, yay
but then I right click and hit view code, guess what happens:

Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)

AARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

i exited, reopened the project and this time the first thing I did was build the program (the dataset was still there as I had saved it) and THIS time, I didn't get the error. then I added a column to the dataset, and tried to save...

CRASH!!!!

Microsoft Visual Basic Compiler has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

WHAT THE is going on !

Re: Visual Studio Setup and Installation Catastrophic Failu Visual Studio Crashing like crazy!!! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

can anyone replicate this problem I cannot get any work done. nothing, not a damn thing until this is fixed. this is horrible, terrible. is this a bug, what the hell is going on I tried again today to see if I could tiptoe around the problem by building before I view the code, and now it's stuck building. it has been building for about 20 minutes now. I can't even exit the program because it says that the build operation has to finish first. the only thing I can do is ctrl-alt-del and kill devenv to exit. incidentally when I do to bring up taskmgr, I see my project.vshost.exe. I've never seen that before.
please help me. I can't get anything done!! I can't even start a project!!!
