That is, if you are creating a generic or referring to a pre-existing one, you will never end up instantiating it -- instantiation happens implicitly within the .Net runtime, when an object of the class is created. It's my impression that instantation only really makes sense for problem (c), where you want to understand the behavior of some generic class.     - TFS Orcas Beta 1 Setup Hi everyone, I recently downloaded the TFS Orca's Beta 1 from MSDN and I was trying to install the beta on a server that is running SharePoint 3.0. I was under the imression that the current "production" release of TFS supported SharePoint 2.0 natively out of the box and that the next release of TFS would support SharePoint 3.0 natively. However, when I run the Orcas Beta 1 installer, after the system scan, it says that I need to have SharePoint 2.0 installed with the latest service pack. What's the deal with the Orca's not using SharePoint 3.0 I need to do a proof-of-concept for the boss and I needed a TFS version that supported SharePoint 3.0.     - VS2003 to TFS/VS2005 migration path. Just to make sure I understand you correctly. The developers have 2003 and 2005 installed on their system. This will give VS2003 the ability to use source control via TFS, without VS2005 trying to force some type of migration upgrade, i.e. fixing syntax error that 2005 does not support, but were valid in 2003.     - Resolve Selected Conflicts Dialog (what do the options mean)? Hi Eugene: I'm afraid that doesn't quite help: I don't have a check-in conflict, I have a merge conflict. Both versions of the file are local (you could also look at it the other way and say that both are on the server - they haven't been edited locally, they are being merged. I think that I found the answer to my question in the command line reference for tf resolve: The AcceptTheirs option instructs Team Foundation Server to overwrite workspace revisions with the server revision. Further, for conflicts generated by running the Merge command, this option accepts the changes from the source of the merge and overwrites the changes in the target. (this would seem to indicate that during a merge TFS considers the "server" to be the source, so I'm assuming that it maps to "Undo my local changes" The AcceptYours option instructs Team Foundation Server to keep your changes and discard the changes in the server version of an item. For conflicts generated by running the Merge command, this option discards the changes from the source of the merge and leaves the target unchanged.     - Team System, Project and Work Items I've got a semi complicated solution that I'd like to implement in Team System for our current business. We develop small pieces of software who's development follows a relatively common process. For each new development there are a number of tasks which remain static such as order hardware, set up hardware blah blah. We also follow a relatively fluid software development process which in some cases is obviously dependent on availability of hardware, nothing new here again. What I'd like to do is using Team System and Project is be able to automate as much of the red tape of this as possible. An example: We kick off a new mini project and begin capturing our requirements. At the kick off point I want to be able to create a new instance of Work Item type Mini Project which is already set up with the states of our software development process. When the new Work Item is created I want this action to automatically generate a number of other Work Items (simple tasks that have states of Active and Completed) for me. These small tasks should be linked to the main Mini Project Work Item type specified above. Then I want to be able to open MS Project, sync the latest tasks, update the scheduling information, resources and predecessors and updates the work item types.     - Cannot Uninstall/Reinstall/Repair/Install After I installed Visual STudio 2005 Professional I tried to install the Service Pack 1. During the update something failed. I think I ran out of disk space or something. I'm not sure, I was updating with MS Windows auto update and it failed. However after this failed my .NET framework did not work anymore and i had to reinstall it and my Visual Studio 2005 didn't work anymore either. Now when I try to Repair/Reinstall/Uninstall Visual Studio I always get exactly the same error like RaduKing: --------------------------- Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Setup --------------------------- The Windows Installer package: g:\vs_setup.msi could not be opened. When I open it the " vs_setup.msi" file is there. Clicking Retry doesn't help and Cancel cancels the setup. I have tried a lot of things but i can't get Visual Studio 2005 to work anymore and i can not even unisntall und reinstall it. I need Visual Studio 2005 for my studies and programming so if anyone could help me to solve this problem without reinstalling my whole system i would be thankful!     - Can't Set/Version Startup Project From what I can tell, Visual Studio isn't completely getting/seeing the change. And for some reason it doesn't look like it's actually creating a .suo file. Hmmmm. In a previous attempt to get my change to 'stick' I did something RASH: I 'added' the .suo file to my 'repo' in the hopes that it would somehow get picked up. (Of course, all that did was 'add' the file as another versioned resource - not as something that was available when VS started up (I typically use SVN - so adding the .suo file didn't seem quite as dumb as it really was at the time).     - How to remove default sorting in Crystal Reports? not using any groups, just trying to publish the report identical to the dataset with its sorting intact. CR does not retain any previous sorting for a dataset. It default sorts it based on the first column in ascending order. You have to reapply your sorting criteria to CR. Make the first field a sortfield in record sort expert. Then save your sortexpression and sortdirection in session state from whatever control you were using to sort the dataset. Reapply this criteria after binding the report to the reportviewer.     - Visual Studio 2005 ASP.NET Debugging on Windows Vista and IIS 7.0 I am attempting to debug an ASP.NET web application using Visual Studio 2005 Team Developer edition (SP1) on Windows Vista Business and IIS 7.0. Everything seems to work normally when I click Visual Studio's "Start Debugging" menu item. The code stops at the first breakpoint I've set and I'm able inspect variables, the call stack, etc. However, after about two minutes something happens and I'm no longer debugging the application. I can continue clicking things in IE and the application responds, however, it never stops at any breakpoints. It's like the debugger has been disconnected from the process it was debugging. I also get the following message in Visual Studio's Output window: The program '[1268] w3wp.exe: Managed' has exited with code -3 (0xfffffffd). The looks like some sort of timer expiration or something. Installing VSIP 2005 Beta2 with VS 2005 Beta2 I get a message "VSIP License Required" and in Help/About of VS2005B2 a message reads "A VSIP License is required to use this version of Microsoft Visual Studio".

So far I have not been able to find out where to get this license, but I do see people posting messages in the news-group asking the same thing (no useful answers yet). Any idea what/where/how-to deal with this

This information on the splash screen and the Help->About dialog simply means that you installed the VSIP SDK (now referred to as the Visual Studio SDK).

In the past, VSIP was a partner-restricted program and not generally available for 'free' consumption. If you downloaded and installed the VSIP SDK and agreed to the EULA, you are fully licensed to use the SDK.

In short, don't worry about the message. You have all the proper licensing.

VSIP License Required - pertains to the PLK or 'Package Load Key' which is required when you distribute your software package(Extensibility/VS Integration Package) on machine's with the SDK installed. You can obtain a PLK for your integration type product free of charge by first registering here http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/partners for free as an affiliate member, and then submitting your product details to microsoft who then lists your package in a commercially available catalog.

Already registered. Thanks to both replies above for the info. What both I and the originator of this query need to know is how to get rid of an annoying message; particularily annoying as it implies that our fully registered systems are less than so.
