I want to force one group of users to reselect a valid value for a particular field every time they do an edit. I can reset the field using WHENCHANGED, but that applies to another specific field. Is there a way to do this more generically, or is there some specific field that immediately changes when the work item is open for edit

This is an interesting request, one I haven't heard of before. (Not saying its not valid )

Could you explain why you need this functionality What are you trying to accomplish

Our support team creates bugs and adds customer response notes to existing ones. We've had a few problems with notes not being properly attributed, so we'd like to force them to enter a fresh value in a custom field or two every time they make any changes (currently that info is included in their notes). This way we can go back through the history to check in situations where entries in the notes field are incomplete.

It looks like you would like to fire a rule to EMPTY a field either

1) Whenever a work item is brought up for ediitng

2) Whenever ANY field in the work item is changed.

From what you've described, it appears you really want #2, and no, there isn't a way to do that. You need to do a WHENCHANGED rule for each field you want to detect.

Sorry.
