Please Help,

I've been trying all day to get my web site templates to show in visual studio, but they don't appear.

I've installed sp1, I've run devenv /installvstemplates, I've tried installing VS80-KB915364-X86-ENU.exe, then WebApplicationProjectSetup.msi (but that didn't work for some reason -it said the 1st program wasn't installed, although I just installed it ) and I haven't had any luck.

On another forum they said it might be that my registry has had entries deleted from a registry clean, which is possible, but it hasn't got any specific solution.

I've definitely got the files for the templates, in C:\program files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\Web\

They just don't show up in VS.

I'm running Visual Studio Professional 2005, on XP pro.

There were indeed issues with Registry Cleaners more than a year ago, I don't know if that is still true today:

Try any of the following:

  • Start a command prompt as admin and run devenv.exe /installvstemplates again
  • Reset your environment settings in Visual Studio
  • Perform a repair installation of Visual Studio but then you will also need to re-install SP1.

Didn't work.

I tried uninstalling visual studio, and it can't even do that.

what a crappy piece of software, it doesn't even work when you want to remove it.

Create a .reg file and copy the below contents then double-click that file, this will add the entries to the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\NewProjectTemplates\TemplateDirs\{39c9c826-8ef8-4079-8c95-428f5b1c323f}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\NewProjectTemplates\TemplateDirs\{39c9c826-8ef8-4079-8c95-428f5b1c323f}\/1]
@="#3300"
"NewProjectDialogExOnly"=dword:00000001
"SortPriority"=dword:00000064
"TemplatesDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\\Web\\.\\WebProjects\\VB"
"DeveloperActivity"="VB"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\NewProjectTemplates\TemplateDirs\{39c9c826-8ef8-4079-8c95-428f5b1c323f}\/2]
@="#3301"
"NewProjectDialogExOnly"=dword:00000001
"SortPriority"=dword:000000c8

Thanks for your help Gabriel, I appreciate it, I did a whole heap of stuff to get VS going again, I did edit the registry with your code, and It works now, I'm unsure whether it helped or not, I'm hoping I don't get the problem ever again, but If I do, I'll know where to come.

I had the same problem and the code above (for .reg file) fixed it. I believe my problem was caused by an interrupted SpyBot program. Other than that, who knows...

Thanks for the help Wink
