I just installed MSDN subscriptions library to my PC from the DVD dated January 2006 (1.61GB).

I can not get local help to work within Visual Studio 2005. I did read all the above threads but i am still not able to get MSDN integrated with VS2005

thanks,

Hello Mark,

MSDN subscriptions library (Januuary 2006 DVD) will not work with VS 2005. January 2005 library is built to work with VS 2003 and VS 2002. You need MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005. This library integrates and work as Local help in VS 2005. It should be in the same package as VS 2005.

If you are a MSDN subscriber and have downloaded products before from the subscribers site you should be able to download MSDN library for Visual Studio 2005 from this path.

Please go to MSDN subscription site at http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/. You can find MSDN library for Visual Studio 2005 under following node on the subscriptions site.

Developer Tools
Visual Studio 2005
English
MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005

Thanks

Khairun,
Yes, I am an MSDN subscriber.

I located the MSDN Library for VS2005 DVD (Disc#3076, December 2005).

I deleted and then reinstalled the MSDN Library from the DVD #3076 disc.

I started VS2005. In VS2005: I set the Help option to 'try local only, not online'. Then I go into help>>search and enter 'string'.
¡®No results found¡¯ and ¡®Local Help (0)¡¯ is displayed.

Apparently VS2005 Help is not referencing the "C:\Program Files\MSDN\MSDN8.0" folder. Why not

I just installed VS 2005 and it ask for MSDN Disk1 for help files. My IT person gave me only 2 disks for VS 2005. Is MSDN disk come with VS 2005 Or how can I get local help for VS 2005

I am having this same issue and I do have "MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005" installed and when MSDN is running by itself local help works fine. If I run from VS.Net however it does NOT work. I always get "no results found" and (0) on the Local Help tab.

I have set options to search local help only and do have it selected.

Why would it work externally but not when launched from VS.Net

By the way, the old style help was a LOT better in many respects...

Hi All,

Let's try adjusting the Help settings in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE and see if this solves the problem:

  1. Open Visual Studio 2005.
  2. In the main toolbar, click Tools > Options > Help.
    1. In the Show Help using: dropdown list, select Integrated Help Viewer.
  3. Expand the Help topic.
    1. Click on the Dynamic Help subtopic.
      1. In the Categories and Topic Types windows, check all available checkboxes.
    2. Click on the Online subtopic.
      1. In the When Loading Help Content window, click the Try Local first, then Online radio button.
      2. In the Search These Providers and Codezone Community windows, check all available checkboxes.
  4. Click the OK button to close the Options dialog box.
  5. Close and then re-open Visual Studio 2005.
  6. Try the Help again, and see if this now works properly.

Hope this helps,

Frank

Frank,

Thanks but that is exaclty what I had done. Works fine if I fire up MSDN standalone just not from VS.Net and the GUI and version of Document Explorer launched are exactly the same - V8.0.50727.42 RTM.

The only difference I can find after launching them both side-by-side is the Help/About shows different product IDs and the graphic on the left side shows MSDN vs. "Visual Studi Combined Collection" and the "Collection Information" text is a different font size but says the same thing.

Re: Developer Documentation and Help System VS2005 uable to get local help

Mr. Lee

I am having the same issue as well.

Whenever I do a search it always reports that "No results found." for "Local Help (0)". All of the online help always returns results. I had to set my help to "Try local only, not online" when it was discovered that my help was eating up over half of the companies external bandwidth. We found out that whenever I did a "Help->Index" my help would always go to an external source. The index works ok when "Try local only" is on but searches still do not work. I believe that this may of happen when I put Service Pack I on or put some of the .NET 3.0 components on my machine.

I normally use external help but after looking at the responses I changed to internal and still have the same problem.
