I've downloaded the SP1, tried to install it. The installation hung up, and the error I've found in the log file is -

 Item ID: VS80sp1-KB926601-X86-ENU.msp to "<path>"
 ERROR [16389]
 ERROR [16389]
 - Extracting package item to file
 ERROR [16389]
 ERROR [16389]

When execution started, the publisher was unidentifed, rather than Microsoft.

Tried to download the file half a dozen times, clearing the cache, rebooting the computer, and to no avail.

Using XP SP2 English, and downloaded the English SP1 for VS2005.

I just had the same problem, can confirm for me that it was a corrupted file, downloading again fixed the problem.

I did not try turning the anti-virus off, but after ~10 attempts, I finally got a copy that worked.

Is this "ERROR [16389]" a serious issue or not

I'm having the same problem.

When I got the error, the installation processs froze, or at least so it seemed.

Eventually I just got a new hard disk, made a 12GB partition for system (C:), 12GB partition for applications (D:), had everything installed from scratch (including XP SP2), finishing with VS8 & SP1. The SP1 took a significant amount of time to install, but eventually completed successfully.

IIRC, the SP1 installation required ~2GB on C: plus some space on D: (where VS8 was installed both times).
