I am getting extremely frustrated with the report designer. I can't seem to be able to do anything without VS just shutting down/Crashing with no error or a quick flash of a screen then closing.

The problem seams to be related to the datasets getting corrupted like the dataset for the parameter for Area.ParentID.

When I go to the preview report pane I will get this error:

The report parameter 'AreaParentID' uses field 'ParameterValue' in a data set reference, but the dataset 'AreParentID' does not contain that field.

The event viewer shows:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( MSOLAP$LocalCube ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Errors in the metadata manager. The configuration property updates were not persisted. Internal error: An unexpected exception occured..

This one time I would like a "Send Report" button to send the erro to Microsoft.

Is the report designer always so fragile or am I missing something

Could you check which version of SQL Server you have installed

If you do not have SQL Server SP1 installed, please do so as it should fix these crashes you are seeing.

Thanks,

Othmane

I believe is sp1 - Microsoft SQL Server Yukon - 9.00.2047

I also get "query preparation failed" and something about "Attempting to read or write protected memory" when I try to run a dataset prepare query.

Hello,

Are you still experiencing this problem

I actually stopped trying to use it since it was far to frustrating. Instead I decided to use the winforms and reportviewer control. It is a lot more stable and more forgiving. I'm not sure if I would now have all the crashes since I've learned more about report building using the winforms reportviewer control though I'm not willing to find out at this time.

I know exactly what is happening. Each report has several datasets with default query parameters. You must change those default values to something that will return results (in each dataset) before you make any other changes to the report.

What is happening is that one or more of the datasets returns no rows when using the default query parameter, and then the "Preview" view simply blows up.

Good Luck!
