We have an eight person workteam. Historically, when we were a VB6 shop, each person had a copy of VSS (98 version) with their licensed Visual Studio. Under VS 2005, for which a Source Safe 2005 license doesn't come free, will each person on the team be required to purchase their own license for VSS ...or if one license is purchased and installed on a server, could the team work from that one individual license

SourceSafe (and all other MS developer client tools) are licensed per-user. So long as every user has a license, you can install it on as many machines as you want.

In the 2005 products, SourceSafe comes with VS Team editions and also with MSDN Pro.

My company have two developers. Each will be getting a subscription to MSDN Pro.

But we share the database on a development server. Does this mean we have to buy a third copy of Visual Source Safe 2005

No. You only need 1 copy per person.
