No matter how many times I reset the toolbox and show etc it is still empty - I have tried rebuilding Its wierd in some projects its there in others it isnt.

I highly doubt it, but..... did you check your references Maybe you need a certain reference in your project that you are missing. That's usually what I find is the problem from project to project.

No - dont think so - I have a proper toolbox in some of my other projects - new projects open with OK toolBox - but the project I am working on has lost its toolbox - tired right click restore etc and no luck just blanked out grey where the tools should be.

(I'll assume that by "restore" you mean "reset")

What's in the toolbox usually depends on what type of file is in the editing window that has focus. So, in this project, when you open it, what's the editing window you're in

If no files are open, then nothing at all is going to show in the toolbox.

Things should change in the toolbox if you go to the SOlution Explorer and open one of your solution files.

If (for example, since you posted in the Report Controls forum) you're editing an RDL or RDLC, all you should see in a reset-vanilla toolbox would be Report items, and a General section which may be blank.

(Also, just in case, what type of project is it Is it the same project type as the other ones that open okay )

yes sorry I did mean reset.

No thats not the problem - I did zip the project and send it to a friend who open it on his PC - it opened correctly with all the tools in the toolbox - he sent it back to me - i put it in a different place and opened it. It then worked just fine. However, it suddenly vanished again. I have yet to try goingthrough the whole process again to get it back. I am perplexed as to why it suddenly goes feet up without any warning and then wont come back.

Wow. That's actually kind of cool <g>. Can we post screen shots in these messages I'd actually like to see what this looks like...

Since it works in other projects, and it works in other solutions... does it work if you move THIS project to a DIFFERENT solution (just trying to figure out what exactly makes the difference)

I moved it to new location and it is now working again. I am starting to think it has to do with my laptop. I have been having lots of problems with applications failing to load with - i think its called cmmd.exe not responding. I then have to reboot to get my laptop to work again. I freqently have not responding errors in all sorts of proceses.

I was happily working away on a form with the toolbox present - when it vanished - I then went to view - toolbox and opened it again - it was after this that all the controls failed to return. I wanted to drag and drop a radio buttob onto my form and it kept telling me there were no controls available. I think when it died it then failed to initialise properly in some way

OK, this may be a wacko suggestion but...

I had a Toshiba laptop that worked JUST FINE except with Visual Studio, it had some weird problems that would show up after an Intellisense tooltip appeared and other "dynamic" effects in the IDE like that. It turned out that this particular graphics chip had a specific-to-Visual Studio problem and there was a driver update specific to this.

I kid you not. See http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/search.do cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=727235xml&sliceId=&dialogID=9094870&stateId=0%200%2010893723

Here is the relevant information -- maybe you should check your mfgr for something similar:

Update the video driver to
A V6.4823-123.22_1 or later.
