I am working on an application which uses a lot of CSS for dynamic layouts as well as dynamic fields in which the sizes (width and heigth) are set in percentages so that screen resolution is not a display issue. In other words, the field sizes are dynamically relative to the screen resolution. I am encountering a problem though; it concerns textareas. When the textarea loads a very long unspaced string (a silly thing that shouldn't happen in the real-world but hey, it's part of the test cases...), the string never actually goes to the next line nor does a horizontal scrollbar appear. It just increases the width of the textarea to fit that one very long String into one line. What I want is the textbox to either rely on vertical scrollbars or skip lines. Under Firefox I get the vertical scrollbars which is nice. How can I force one these behaviour under IE I've type using the 'wrap' attribute and 'word-wrap' under CSS but no dice.     - IE7 icon Problem Firstly, let's clear up the icon definitions. Favicons are those that are downloaded from the linked website and show the websites logo or whatever. The icons that we are all concerned with here in this fourm that are in error are the windows icons. These icons along with an array of others are usually contained in system dll files. Indexes into these files are kept track of in the registry and in the shortcut or favorite itself under properties. For example if the dll has 256 icons and windows calls the dll as shell.dll, 255 the 255 is the index into the icon file. In this case the last one (base 0). The problem here is with IE7. The registry entries under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (url and internetshortcut) appear correct. Icon files or container files contain an array of icons. Windows displays icons based on the index into the icon file. So if you call the icon file followed by a number, the number indicates which icon in the container file is to be used. This value is stored in the favorite or shortcut under properties. The index in url.dll for favorites is 0. The zero points to the first icon of the array in this dll, which is the correct icon for favorites. There is another container file that windows uses called shell32.dll. The first icon in this container file is the windows default icon. Now, when IE7 accesses the favorite, it changes the icon container file name from the url.dll file to the shell32.dll file. Microsoft appears to be ignoring the problem throughout the Beta stage into the final release. Until Microsoft realizes that there is a problem and fixes it, I suggest changing the icon in the properties dialogs of the offending favorites from %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32\url.dll. Unfortunately, as soon as you access this favorite with IE7, the icon file will be reset to the wrong one again. The solution is to set all of the favorites to read-only until MS comes up with the fix. All browsers based on IE like Maxthon will experience the same problem until the error is corrected by MS.     - Cookie folder has disappeared! I need help. I have run SpyHunter several times and it keeps coming up with the same cookies for me to delete. When I go to look at the actually cookie file (under document and settings\myname... there's no cookie file anymore. I do a search, and still nothing. Under folder options I have the "show hidden files and folders" enabled. So, it's showing me all the hidden files. No cookie folder. I have all Windows updates. I am using IE7. Other than some annoying cookies that are somewhere on my computer, the computer has no viruses. I did have an issue earlier in the week regarding "ultimate cleaner", which I had to resort to using "SmitFraudFix". Since I didn't go looking for the cookie folder until after I became aware of the ultimate cleaner, I don't know if the folder was missing prior to it, or if I lost it because of it.     - IE7 FTP Security Issue I have run into a security hole in my ftp site that has only now become a problem with IE7. The structure of my ftp directory involes several streaming media folders and a Client folder in the root directory. The contents of the client folder and its children are all password protected. Inside these folders I upload content for my clients to view approvals and allow them to upload files for my own use. The root directory has read-only permissions for everybody because of the streaming content I am hosting. In the past when a client logs into their ftp folder, the password protected nature of the client folder prevents them from moving up in the hierarchy outside of their folder. In IE7 however, I have found that a client can now leave her folder and move all the way through my hierarchy, into all of the folders I have designated read-only for everybody. She can not of course enter other client's folders because of their password requirements; however, I do not want a client to have the ability to navigate through these parent directories even if she only has read persmissions. I suspect this issue has to do with the new way IE7 reads ftp folders. What solutions do you suggest I am considering creating a second domain specifically for client files, thus separating the streaming material. I suspect this would solve everything, however I would prefer to just reconfigure my current setup if there is a solution present.     - IE7 div not stretching to fill width I keep getting this and I can't find the fix to it anywhere.... please help! When a div doesn't have enough content to fill the width of the area the div doesn't fill the whole width. A gap will appear at the end of the div in IE7 browsers. I don't want to have to set fixed widths for the middle content section so that it can shrink to fit re-sizing the browser. I've tried everything I can think of. Setting the width to 100% breaks it because the left navigation pane or right pane will no longer float. It's probably something really obvious so I can't find it on blogs.     - How to get image or picture data? I wanted to know if there's any way to retrieve the actual "image" as such in a BHO. I want to add functionality such as "Save to folder" or "send by email" for images through my BHO. However, after quite a bit of searching, I don't seem to get the actual image "data" as such.     - IE 7 display blank page on refresh when viewing session enabled PHP pages served from IIS 6!! Pages using PHP sessions and external javascript in the head portion of the html document and which served from IIS 6 to IE 7 are not refreshing properly (displays blank on refresh).     - Calling ActiveX function from Javascript Hi, From what I've heard, you're supposed to be able to call an embedded activex function or set one of its properties from the javascript in an html/asp page as long as the function or property is declared as public in the code.     - activex cab file Hi, I have an activex control that also contains a .dll to convert file formats. VB6 packages it into a cab that work fine until the program uses the dll. Gets a file not found error when accessing the dll. Works fine if I move the dll to the system32 folder.     - IE7: iexplore.exe Application Error Well, after I updated my QuickTime, I've been getting this error when I close out a window that had a PNG image in it (because QuickTime loads PNG's): iexplore.exe - Application error The instruction at "0x09809bc7" referenced memory at "0x00000038". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program. Everything works fine after I click ok, and nothing seems to be malfunctioning. The locations where the instruction/memory are will vary, but that's the most recent one I recieved. I've tried repairing QuickTime, but it didn't help.     - Javascript validation not working in IE 7 but works in IE 6 JavaScript validation is not working in IE 7 but works just fine in IE 6. Function to validate a text box to check that the input is numbers only else, raise an alert message and return false. This function is called on the OnBlur event of the textbox on the page. In IE 7 and FF 2.x, the error message is raised when an non numeric input is entered in the text box but after clicking on the page/any other control of the page, the validation is disabled and allows the user to continue to fill the next field. However, the page works fine in IE 6.0 and does not allow the user to fill in the next control till the current text box value is corrected. Any insight in this matter would be highly appreciated. Your website should have cross-browser compatibility. Tabbed browsing is not supported by all browsers.

BTW, there is a W3C draft named CSS3 that have mentioned this, but it is a working deaft so IE7 does not support it.

Currently, you CAN NOT. Only the user can set his preferences to do that. In a few years, the target property of the CSS3 hyperlink module may be approved and later implemented. Even when this happens, you can expect browsers with tab-browsing capabality still give complete control to the user regarding how links are opened.
