This is not the common inability to uninstall IE 7. I have read through many of the problems other peoples have been having trying to uninstall certain versions of IE 7 to get the newest version. This is not what I am trying to do.

What first started the issue was that I had installed IE 7. (Bad choice to begin with. I am a firm supporter of Mozilla FireFox.) After installing IE 7, I attempted to use the program for a website that is IE specific. However, after double clicking the IE 7 desktop icon that had been created, IE 7 had created an immediate error and had to be closed. I couldn't tell what error had been created but I know its on a different line and with a different code every time when I read the "details" of the error and subsequent shutdown.

Now, I've figured to just uninstall IE 7 and revert back to IE 6. BUT, after several attempts at uninstalling, I get the following error:

Setup cannot copy the file: ieakmmc.chm

So I click "Cancel" and I get the following message:

Do you want to continue setup without copying this file

I click "Yes" and get the following message:

If you cancel copying this file Windows might not work correctly. Are you sure you want to cancel this file

And once again I click "Yes". What is now being referred to as "Set Up" instead of "Uninstall" continues on, but immediately after that I get another error of the same message, stating that the file "ieeula.chm" cannot be copied. So I go through the same process as I did with the "ieakmmc.chm" file and after finishing this, I get another file that can't be copied. The rest of the files that could not be copied were:

iesupp.chm
iexplore.chm
inetres.adm
html.iec

After going through those files in the same fashion as I did with the original "ieakmmc.chm" file, I get a new error stating:

The file 'mshtml.dll.000' on Windows NT Service Pack uninstall Directory is needed.

I treat this error the same way as "ieakmmc.chm" and IE 7's uninstall creates one last error stating that the uninstall cannot be completed. I also tried clicking "Retry" but in doing so, I cannot go past the first file "ieakmmc.chm".

I figure to download and install the newest IE 7, because after all that I've read, that will uninstall the previous version and everything will be fine. Well, after downloading and doubling click the installer, I get through almost the entire unpacking process of the installer and get the following error:

"update\iesetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

This error tells me about as much as "I am mad at you, and you should know why, therefore I won't tell you why." So in all of my frustration to still download IE 7, or attempt to revert BACK to IE 6, I have come thus far and am now stuck at what I should do now.

PLEASE, I apologize for the long windedness, but I need some help with this. Thank you to anyone that has taken the time to read all of this craziness.

I share the madness.... I had the EI 7 english version.. Try to install the dutch one. It's a bit easier to learn to work with it.... AT once my computer is telling me that there are parts missing. Like the one i OFFICIALY donwloaded from the net is not complete. BAck to EI6 and try again. NO no no... not that easy. SO back to the english one. Done , yes back on track. NO... my internet options were gone. I could only type the web adress, go back and forward and that's it.

Everything off would be the solution. Nope... missing NEEDED files. Found them all exept on mshtml.dll.000. Using the search from the computer. Found two files ... readme files where the file is writen down.

Half way... pc out.... rebooted himself and told me there was a serious fault somewhere.

Even did a back to a certain point (don't know the term in english.. restore the computer even went back to 29 jan 2007.

Try it all... ttry to put firefox on it... can not even download it. Because the downloading happens in a new window and there my computer sais... error...

I loved working with IE7 but not anymore

I'm so glad I'm not the only one

Hello hello,

I did take the time to read it all.

I had the same probs so.. I kept on trying and got the IE 7 off my computer. With the IE7 also came two popups that I can't get off. It's a drivecleaner thing. Try it and buy it later !!!!! ANd somthing called WinProAnti 'something-something'2006. I completly reinstalled everything. Started from scratch. Let windowsdefender run and My pc help told me about Hitman Pro. Everything clean both programms told me.

But the WInpro thing and drivercleaner keep popping up. I did tell my pc not to open popup. But this ones just open into a new window. It came with the IE7 but only opens on certain sites.

Eventho.. i have the IE7 on it agian, came with the upgrade and it works sort of ok now. I liked working with it. But if the probs keep on coming i Have to find another solution.

Evertything else that I have on my Pc from microsoft is ok.So i really hope i can fix it all.

Thx to everyone that takes the time to read the forum and try to help others.

Keep up the good work.

Hey Brian,

It took me a while to resolve it all. But after a friend of mine told me to let WIndows Defender run on it, i was able to remove the IE7. I'm not a computer freak and i don't know that much about it. But this worked for me. Maybe the files the Defender found and removed had nothing to do with the fact that I could not deinstalle The IE7 but.. It worked. You don't mis-do anything by letting the Defender run. The only thing you have to have is a legal copie of the windows.

The one think I did learn over the years, having probs like this and so. Is to make backups. Every two weeks I put all my files on a extern harddrive so , I don't loose it all when my computer sais "Poef" and does not like me anymore.

Hope you find a sollution fast..

I am attempting to install IE6, which I downloaded from oldversion.com. If this doesn't work ... I have no other options. I'm not sure what to do. Nobody has come up with a solution for me and I've been digging for months now.

Hi everyone,

Here is the solution to this problem, actually you have two options.

1. When you have that message about the file ieakmmc.chm, select browse and select c:/i386 the file is in this folder, and the uninstallation finish succesfully. i have done this several times and always works.

2. if you don't have that file there, go to the same folder, c:/i386 search for the file ie rigth click on it and select install . some times works

good luck

Update:

After having worked with IE 7 and IE 6 uninstalls and installs, and all of the folder deleting and pasting and copying and renaming, and all of the updates and restarts and reloads ...

I have finally beaten IE 7. It works. Finally, after six months of fighting with this program, I've gotten the install to work properly. Here's what I did:

Downloaded IE 7
Installed It
Restarted
WHAM, it works. Like brand friggin' new.

I don't know what I did that caused it to finally work. Maybe I threatened it enough with the possibility of having techies from work come in and pick away at the program. Maybe ... just maybe ... I willed it in to doing what I wanted originally.

So I can finally say ...

CASE CLOSED!

I encountered the same problem today. Fortunately, it didn't take me months to get it working again. First of all, this problem started with a runtime error. I just did a system restore to fix that, but not before I unistalled IE7. That was my mistake It certainly seems like it 'cause that's when I couldn't re-install because of all the missing files mentioned above. Anyway, this is what I did:

I just did a simple search for the files on my computer. I only found the first one. All others I just ignored, and to my suprise, it said IE7 was successfully uninstalled. Restarted my computer and just re-installed IE7. There doesn't seem to be a very clear solution to this problem even after I have already gotten past it, so good luck. Just wanted to put my two cents incase this works for someone else. Again, good luck!

Re: Internet Explorer Web Development IE 7 Uninstall/Install Issues

Acerbic

OK, I have an Acer with Windows XP and XP office and made the mistake of upgrading the default IE6 to IE7 and found both trying to run at the same time. Now having tried to uninstal and reinstall IE7 I found a confusion of directories including IE7 update and IR7 and IE7(2) and t seemed to me that IE6 was trying to riun but with IE7 still there spoilng the party.I went to Add/remove and removed the IE7 updates and then tried to remove IE7.Same results as everyone else. The big stumbling block was MShtml.dll.000 at which point uninstall quit.In the end, I restarted the uninstall proicess and at the first file i couldn't find I did a google and found it on a web site. (:http://220.0.115.35/C:/WINDOWS/ie7/ or the google cached site if this isn't available). At this point, there being nothing to lose, I simply downloaded it to the desktop. Then, in the unistall program, browsed to find this file on desktop. This worked an absolute treat as all the missing files are there, even the elusive mshtml.dll.000 and once past this point it was all plain sailing.Once it was finally uninstalled I then went and deleted the IE7 folders.Of course, loading IE6 wasn't a picnic since uninstalling IE7 didn't result in the expected re-install of the previous version, so I had to download it and manually install it. It got stalled in a loop, but I managed OK in the end and am now happy to use IE6 for windows updating etc. (and Firefox for everything else).
