I am getting intermittent blank pages - from 10% to 60% of the times - when I try to get my index.php page.

The status bar says DONE but the address bar still shows the original URL and not the one for the page retrieved. After refreshing the browser, the page shows up and the address bar is updated properly. However, I know that the page was retrieved, just not showing and that the refresh did not retrieve the page from the server. (I had put logging statements in the server side so I can see when the page is processed and it is processed upon the first attempt to retrieve it; the refresh does not generate and logs on the server.)

I've tried moving the <SCRIPT> sections inside the <BODY> section, as suggested in earlier postings but to no avail.

Since this file is being accessed by others, I cannot expect everyone to try to upgrade their browsers - or even know how to do that.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be the cause of this and if there is a work around for it that doesn't require users out there to patch their browsers

Thanks!

If it works in other browsers, and not IE, then it sounds like you've encountered the famous "Self Closing Script Tag Bug" in IE.

Check out this great resource for more info on this bug, and the workaround:

Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm already using </script> to close all the script sections. The only /> in the file were for <br />, which I replaced with <br>,j just in case.

The problem is still around.

The intermittent nature of it is the most confusing part.

Any other suggestions

Thanks!

I could probably pinpoint it, if I could see the source... or at least what is generated.

(not sure if the forum software will wreck this link, but here goes)

Try right-clicking and adding this as a "favorite" in IE (dismiss all "this might curve your spine" type warnings, I assure you there is no harmful JS)

View Generated Source

(if the forum S/W kills the link, just save any page as a favorite, and then change the properties of it, to set the address to:
javascript:'<xmp>'+window.document.body.outerHTML+'</xmp>';
this will expose the generated source)

Then view the page in IE that is causing issues.... as soon as you spot a "blank" one, click the favorite you just saved... it should dump the generated source of the page you were viewing to the screen...

Either try and inspect that yourself... or copy/paste the results back in this forum and we'll dig into it to find the answer.

Cheers,

I tried this (cool trick!) and when the page went blank, I chose the favorite and got, as the source, just:

<BODY></BODY>

Strange...Does it mean that something in the file caused it to lose everything in the <head> section as well as the <body> section and replace it all with a minimally semi-valid HTML file

(If I hit refresh instead of looking at the source, the downloaded page displays properly - why is it that it doesn't do it the first time )

Thanks for your help!
