Hi,

I have created a project in which i am downloading a new file extension type (.mcf). When I try to download it from internet explorer it give warning message. Warning message say's that this file is unknown. Then I register this file type by folder options>>file type>>new. This file is actually xml file. I am opening this file with my own .net exe. What to do

I want to download this file without any warning.

Please help.

When you added a new file type extension, there is an 'advanced' button where you can give the 'Accociated File Type'. Hopefully if you .Net app is registered correctly, then something from it should appear on that list.

If the app does not already appear. then highlight the added file extension, and go to the 'Advanced' button in the 'Details for ...'

There you should be able to pick the command-line for how your app opens that file type.

Thanks for reply.

I didn't register my .net application. How to register it. I have done some part of registration of file type registration from which i can open my file (.extension) with my exe. In folder option>>file type>>.extension>>advanced>>new>>open>>command(fullpath\exename.exe" "%1")
I have unchecked "confirm open after download" check also.
My exe is done in C# .net windows application project.
But browser give "File download security warning" for downloading. Giving yellow signal of security.
I am downloading file from Apache server as a attachment.
I want to bypass that security warning.

If you want to know the correct way to register your .Net Application for that file extension you need to look into creating a Setup and Deployment project and use the File Types Editor: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ytsyfc3d(vs.80).aspx

The fact that you are serving the file from Apache should not matter, IIS or Apache will both work just fine, but you do need to make sure that Apache is configured correctly and sending down a good MIME type in the Content-Type HTTP header. If you want to see the HTTP traffic. I highly recomment fiddler. http://fiddlertool.com

Thanks for reply,

I made one setup project in which I inserted my exe file and then I create one new file type.
But still I can't remove that warning from internet explorer.
That setup project just create one file type. And open that file type files from that exe.
That thing I can do it from folder option. How I sign or register my exe (using windows\microsoft.net\framework\version\regasm.exe or
Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\SDK\version\Bin\signcode.exe)

Which MIME type I can use to register I have created my own mime type. is it the problem
In html source which mime type is required

please help...

Bad news.

.MCF is an extension used by a known unsafe file format. The logic that produces the warning dialog for unsafe filetypes has been hard-coded into IE and there's no amount of registry magic that will make it go away. The list of unsafe extensions includes obvious ones as well as some that are lesser known. The list changes from release to release (there are currently 67) so I hesitate to provide it in its entirety in this forum; however, here are some that should be obvious.

ADP ASP BAS BAT CER CHM CMD COM CPL

CSH EXE HLP HTA INF JS LNK MDB MDE MSI

PIF PST REG SCR TMP URL VB VBS WSF WSH

Pick another file extension.
