I use OE6 to archive my hotmail locally via dial-up until I installed IE7 and then I'm requested to logon when synchronizing my hotmail folders. I have not been able to logon yet and synch my mail. I also have McAfee security running and have disabled it to see if the connection is being firewalled to no avail. I just need to know for sure if hotmail is no longer available to OE users or there is an easy fix to restore what was a very handy facility. Help!

Afew minutes after I posted this I found KB907942, an obscure update that Most Magnificent Microsoft has for just this problem. I will repost if it doesn't work.

I have the exact same problem with both my SMTP and POP3 accounts in outlook (Outlook can't connect to either of the servers). Curiously, the problems started after I installed IE7 aswell. The same thing happened when I installed IE7 on a different computer. If anyone has a solution, I'm all ears.

Also, the KB article KB907942 doesn't exist.

You both are most likely experiencing the problem discussed in the following Microsoft KB article:

(904942) Authentication fails when you use Outlook or Outlook Express to try to log on to a HTTP-based mail server if you use Internet Explorer version 7.0
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904942/en-us

Hope this helps

The problem is not limited to HTTP. It happens when Outlook tries to log into my POP3 and SMTP accounts aswell.

I tested my accounts on a macintosh (using Mail), and they work perfectly. How do I fix the problem

Duh, my bad. KB 904972, it was late after a long day when I posted. My apologies, Hope this helps. It all works fine now and I was able to get my hotmail and archive the messages I wanted with OE6. Good luck.

I'm running WinXP Pro SR2 and have installed the file that the article listed above says to install in order to resolve this issue.

However, even after installing the file and rebooting, I still cannot set the web server to HTTP in Outlook 2002.

Is there a setting in the registry that I can modify to force the issue

sorry riggs,I wouldn't want to recommend tweaking your registry without some pro guidance. I'm not sure what the update did to solve my problem but it did so I'm carrying on. Back up your registry before changing anything so you can go back if you have a snafu. Otherwise, you need to ask your kid or his computer geek buddy where to go from here.

Well ... I am the computer geek in the family ... I have no problem tweaking the registry and have done so, as long as I have instructions on what to do, plus I always back up the registry before I start doing anything.

Sorry riggs, I think you're probably much more qualified than I to address this problem. No offence intended with the geek bit. Sounds like you're headed in the right direction, update me here if you like or if you find another post that has similar subject. I can do the registry thing too, but I've had bad experience when I goofed up and couldn't go back. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had beta testers for free
