I have code that writes a cookie to recall information about a customer. With Protected Mode enabled, this cookie does not get written. (The option for Protected Mode is under Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab. IE7 with Vista only to my understanding). Two questions:

1) What code will allow me to see if the user has Protected Mode enabled

2) Is there a way to still write a cookie that I am unaware of

Thanks in advance!

For anyone's information:

This is what helped our situation:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp url=/library/en-us/ietechcol/dnwebgen/protectedmode.asp

which says:

ˇ°Q: Are there specific locations in the USER PROFILE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry location that an extension in Protected Mode Internet Explorer can not write to

A: Yes, Internet Explorer-specific locations in the following USER PROFILE folders.

Documents and Settings\%USER PROFILE%...
...\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
...\Local Settings\Temp
...\Local Settings\History
...\%USER PROFILE%\Favorites
...\%USER PROFILE%\Cookies

Extensions can write to the following locations.

Documents and Settings\%USER PROFILE%...
...\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Low
...\Local Settings\Temp\Low
...\Local Settings\History\Low
...\%USER PROFILE%\Favorites\Low
...\%USER PROFILE%\Cookies\Low
%USER PROFILE%\AppData\LocalLowˇ±

so instead of looking for the cookie that had been written in the userid\cookies folder we changed our code to look in both userid\cookies and then userid\cookies\low. This fixed our problem. Did not find out how to tell if Protected mode was on but I'm not sure that can be done due to security reasons. Thanks
