    - WDS is slowing down System Performance I have a similar problem. I just installed Office Pro 2007. Outlook 2007 requires WDS 3.0. I installed WDS 3.0 as requested. I let it run until it had ostensibly indexed everything (~20 hours). The index status window indicated that it had stopped and that 0 items were left to index. Now everytime I start Outlook (say after a reboot or at orning startup), the searchindexer runs and clobbers my system performance. I attempt to make it sleep. This is confirmed by the appearance of the "wakeup" button. But the indexer starts up after a few minutes and continues to make my machine virutally useless. I have just spent 5 hours on the phone with MS support (Bangalore). They had me performing a variety of useless tests. Finally stated that the problem was due to an interaction between WDS and other 3rd party "tool bars" and that WDS was probably not installed properly. They also stated that Terminal Services had to be in "automatic" mode (it was previously started, but it was in "manual" mode. I uninstalled the "offending" tool bars and uninstalled/reinstalled WDS. Same result - it continues to run and kill my systems performance. I too cannot unininstall because search is integral to Office 2007, especailly Outlook.     - Indexing home drive I thought as much, but I figured I would ask. Technically what you say would work, as users don't have NTFS permissions to each others home drive. It would of course have WDS trying to access each directory, which would be a bit painful. Thanks for the answer though - it'd be a nice feature to have in a later version though.     - Vista-to-Vista WDS Not Querying Remote Index I am using a regular UNC share path (not administrative). I gave Everyone read access, but this did not make a difference. But, I did notice that I was initiating the search having drilled into a subfolder of the share, and this was a problem. When I run the search from the very root of the share, it's quick and there is no notice---it appears to use the remote index. I knew that remote indexes weren't queried when you ran a search on a store on your local computer, but assumed of course that WDS would do a remote query when starting in a subfolder of a UNC share.     - Delaying file deletion with file adapter Hi, Thanks for the suggestion - I had thought of increasing the polling interval as well, however, my understanding is that it's based on actual time, not the file creation time. If it is based on the file creation time, then I believe that it would address my issue since the reopen by the recording software is instantaneous. Unfortunately, the reopen is out of our control. The third party software automatically performs the reopen as part of the file save process (which is why it's reopening the file from the same place) and doesn't have any settings to allow us to override it reopening the file. The file path is also locked down in the application settings during installation (at our business client's request to ensure that files won't get lost by someone not choosing the correct directory) which also limits us to only being able to have the .wav file saved in a single directory. I walked through a scenario of using a simple FileSystemWatcher .NET app to copy the .wav file to a separate directory for BizTalk (and even possibly using it as the solution), however, again, the third party software is doing something odd behind the scenes during the save because the file watcher app isn't able to pick up the events (create, changed or renamed) and recognize that a new file has been placed in the directory. Not to forget logging and auditing per user. - Data consistency. Although the validation of data can be made in stored procedure, however when the validation becomes more complex and difficuly, it becomes harder to put it into SP and managing it will be even harder. So the application server is better fit to do this role. - Easier update of business logic. Instead of updating N client applications, all you need is to update only the application server. - Better performace. Usually databases cache data per type of queries, so subsequent queries should be the same in order to benefit from any cached data, while the server is more aware of the intent of the client and can rely on its own hand-made cache or a 3rd party cache to quickly fetch data. that's all what I can think of at this moment. However this is serious business, so if you are developing an application for your own department to solve a simple problem, like employees time sheet, you don't have to go into all this mess.     - Manually Configure URLs Eric, Thanks for your response. I just thought it would be cool to do, for many reasons. For instance, I index a basic document which contains all the content that I would like to associate with a URL and then map that document to this URL, not to the URL of the document being indexed. This would solve, what I consider to be a pretty huge usecase, of not being bound to displaying the same document that is indexed. If the document I need to display is huge, I could index instead a smaller version of it, and the huge, fancy version would only be used for display, not indexing. In some sense, this is like a configurable index. It is something one can do post-search for sure, but it would nice to have results show up thru WSD, rather than having to wrap around it with another App. I'm sorry if I've just said the same thing in many words, but I guess that goes to show that there are many ways of looking at it.     - Suspected Problem using MSAFD: lowering DLL ref count. I support several systems using USB check scanners. There are intermittent USB errors seen while the scanner is idle. These are usually preceeded by the lines in the debug log: MSAFD: Pending APCs in cleanup! Waiting... MSAFD: (cleanup) ... all APCs fired, lowering DLL ref count I am trying to find out if the above entries indicate some sort of problem that could affect IO in other Windows device drivers. The customer has not been able to provide any information as to why these entries are being made on their systems other than they are using TCP/IP to communicate scanned data to their host. I made some updates to the data model/schema - adding columns, setting up foreign key relationships - but I am unable to find out how to forward engineer or update my database. When the Orchestration instances append to this document container, it seems they lock and release this file. This file is created from the very first orchestration output. If I use an intermediary Orchestration to pick up and deliver this document container, then this one will consume it - meaning delete it from the folder. If this happens in the microsecond gap when the file is not locked (as would happen when a completing Orchestration releases its lock after writing and another starting one puts a lock on it) - then this semi-complete output file will be consumed by the final logging Orchestration, as well being created anew by the unfinshed, remaining Orchestrations which were appending to it. Having said this, I am not sure about the locking process for Appending to a Send Port. Is it as I said - completing Orchestration releases its lock after writing and the next one puts a lock on it Or is it locked from the beginning until the end - and not released at all between individual Orchestration completions How can I determine this as it happens so fast Tag: Show and Tell Help please Architecture

This forums is not really for questions like this but lets consider it as a show and tell topic.

First of all you will need to define the USB/flash drive. If any computer can see it then any computer can read the contents of the drive. If the contents are readable it could be cracked by a brute force attack. If it can not be read by a computer it is probable that someone could extract the chips and read the data directly.

This is an important point, if you do not keep control of the hardware all the time it can be compromised!

On an hardware level I would say it might be possible to protect it with a password but it could be cracked.

The protection is not on the USB flash drive level but when using the data on the USB flash drive.
