Hi guys

IĄ¯m hoping you can help me I already posted on http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=1111995&SiteID=1&mode=1 but thought that this would be the better forum to post this too.

The user I am working with has WDS installed but is having quite a bit of performance issues and this is a newly bought and installed desktop. When we look at task manager it is the searchindexer.exe that is taking up all of the CPU power and disk writes.

The user has Windows XP and Office 2003

I checked the clientĄ¯s computer and currently he does not have any anti-virus or backup software installed but he does have running in the system tray and startup VNC server, Trillian, HotSync, Adobe Photo Downloader, Virtual Drive, Robo Form and Bear Scheduler.

The searchindexer.exe process continues to eat up CPU and drive writes and when we end task on that exe the PC runs ok but the user really wants to run WDS so a uninstall is not a option he would like to take.

We have re-installed WDS but that did not resolve the problem.

I have found these 2 errors in his application log

Not sure what else to check but here are a couple things.

- Check to see if the "Index Now" button is pressed or not. If it is, the indexing is in effect and won't stop until all files are indexed.
- Update Adobe Acrobat Reader that is installed on the machine to the latest version from www.adobe.com (Version 8).
- Is the default location to be indexed has been modified in anyway
- Leave the computer on and WDS running when the computer is not in use for some time see if it would eventually done indexing the whole system.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks,

David Peng (MSFT)

I have a similar problem. I just installed Office Pro 2007. Outlook 2007 requires WDS 3.0. I installed WDS 3.0 as requested. I let it run until it had ostensibly indexed everything (~20 hours). The index status window indicated that it had stopped and that 0 items were left to index.

Now everytime I start Outlook (say after a reboot or at orning startup), the searchindexer runs and clobbers my system performance. I attempt to make it sleep. This is confirmed by the appearance of the "wakeup" button. But the indexer starts up after a few minutes and continues to make my machine virutally useless.

I have just spent 5 hours on the phone with MS support (Bangalore). They had me performing a variety of useless tests. Finally stated that the problem was due to an interaction between WDS and other 3rd party "tool bars" and that WDS was probably not installed properly. They also stated that Terminal Services had to be in "automatic" mode (it was previously started, but it was in "manual" mode. I uninstalled the "offending" tool bars and uninstalled/reinstalled WDS. Same result - it continues to run and kill my systems performance.

I too cannot unininstall because search is integral to Office 2007, especailly Outlook. What do you recommend

Do you have any antivirus/anti-spyware related software running try disable that to see if you still have the problem.

I'm having similar difficulties ever since installing Outlook2007 on my PC. I'm running XP Media Center, have tons of memory and a fast processor. I run Zone Alarm Pro to protect my PC from intrusions, etc. Evrything was fine until just recently when:

1) I had to renew my subsciption to Norton Antivirus. Even though I selected the standard version (anti-virus only), it comes with an incoming firewall. Great. Now I have two firewalls to slow things up.

2) I replaced Outlook2000 with Outlook2007. Now, nothing happens quickly anymore. And Outlook's CPU usage spikes to 40%+ when idle and 70%+ when actively performing tasks.

I've regularly run Ad-Aware Pro and SpyBot S&D to keep the bad stuff cleaned out of my machine. I've run SmitRem as well when I discovered Smitfraud-C had implanted itself. Everything is clean now. It seems the issue is one caused by Outlook2007 monopolizing CPU usage.

If this is a normal byproduct of Microsoft's Outlook2007, I'm throwing in the towel and buying myself a brand new Mac. I'm tired of the constant virus/firewall issues and now this ... My previous Mac never had any of these problems and always performed beautifully.

Guys,

I too am having a serious performance problem with Office 2007 on my Windows XP SP2 system. It's a Toshiba Portege M400 with 2GB RAM and a 100GB 7200rpm disk. The system screamed with Office 2003 and Outlook 2003. Now, everytime I boot up Outlook 2007, the system hangs for minutes on end then magically all comes back later. I cannot work like this. I updated all system components from Microsoft, Adobe Acrobat (to v8) and Norton Inet Sec (latest). It's worse than ever. Weird thing is that when I installed Vista on this system on another drive, I had no issues. What is Microsoft doing here I cannot stay on Vista because none of my programs are supported. I too may dump Windows and go with a Mac. No problems there! MS HELP if you care!

Please advise... What can I do to improve performance

Ta,

Trish,

The first error is a known bug that has been fixed in WDS 3.01. Please download and install version 3.01 from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx displaylang=en&FamilyID=738fc2de-49b9-4e69-9227-2206277ab7c9

Post back if you are already running 3.01 or if this does not fix both issues.

We just released a patch to Outlook last week that should help address some performance issues, especially for people with large PSTs.

You can read about the update here:

And you can download it here:
