I am having trouble with WDS not being able to locate items I know exist, and within its search path. For example, my desktop has items that it doesnt reveal when I search ing...Is WDS deciding for itself that I should know about the items on my desktop without searching for them

Also, it seems to be in a perpetual state of indexing, with 2 items it will not pass through its system....

any advice is suggested. I m going to get rid of it if it cant do its job.

Are you running WDS 3.0 If that's the case, are you trying to search a .pdf file If you are, make sure that you install the latest Acrobat v8.0 which is compatible with WDS 3.0. Any previous version is not compatible with WDS 3.0 and has been disabled by default. Therefore, it doesn't return the file when searched. Otherwise, let me know your WDS version, the file type that you are trying to find and how you search for it.

thanks David but I believe I have WDS 3 ( how can I check this there is nothing under options) and I have acrobat 8 going. I was actually just looking for the file name but it cant even do that. I have tried word files and pdfs and im not getting stuff from the desktop. What a waste of time!

if you have any other thoughts Id love to hear them.

You can check the version by going to the Control Panel and Add/Remove Program. It should say Windows Desktop Search 3.0 if you have WDS 3 installed. From your reply, most likely you do have WDS 3.0 installed.

Can you please verify specifically that your desktop is being indexed by going to the indexing options explicitly Also, the filename that you are trying to search when placed on the desktop and the search term you used.

If you are still having problems, try to uninstall the version you have and install the latest version from this link: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx kbid=917013.

ISTR that if you rename a "shell folder" such as Desktop or My Documents then WDS will not recognise these folders or their contents.  In other words, they will not even be listed at all if you try to find them by browsing the Custom Folders And Email Locations in the Indexing tab of WDS's Options window.

I think the WDS admininstrator guide(s) make some references to Admin Templates( ) within the Group Policy Editor which allows you to make a setting to overcome this limitation.  I do not think workaround operates for WDS version 2.

so yes, I am running WDS 3.0. I have asked WDS to index my hard drive in addition to default MS office places like outlook and onenote but excluding places like application data, program files and my windows folder. I havent touched any of the advance options so they should be just the default ones. I have asked WDS to rebuild its index several times and while it says indexing in progress it never changes the status of its "items indexed" count which is persistently 0.

I guess I will try re-installing. I dont use macs really but I know I wouldnt have to go through this with osx and they had far superior indexing and search capacities for a while now.

can you speak more plainly what is ISTR What is a ' "shell folder" '

the only thing I can think of related to what you have suggested is that my acer laptop was repaired and a new hard drive was installed - they had a user name in windows that I cant seem to get rid of and though at the Welcome screen and other places my username appears, in the file structure, their default entry is still in mine's place.
