Desktop Search pushed as update in WSUS

Ok so I come in today to my entire user complaining the network is slow. After some investigation I learn it isn't the network it is all the users¡¯ computers running slow because they now have windows desktop search installed on them.

I look in WSUS and it has pushed it as an update because updates are auto approved. I would have thought this would have come as a tool which is why tools are not auto approved.

Now that this has pushed out in WSUS it doesn't give you an option to remove this feature (bug) so can anyone tell me the easiest way of getting it off all of the machines in my organization.

Bad Idea to release this as an update guys.

Same thing here, it sneaked under our auto approval settings.

We're overworked enough without suddenly having to field 200 "my computer is running slow" queries.

We got desktop seach pushed to XP and 2003 Servers.

And of course we did not approve this update in WSUS. We don't want it.

Now we just want know how rid of it quick and quiet!

This is terrible, I hate those search things and toolbars, they take up so much room, and really slow down machines.

I hate the way this has 'update' has been dumped on us, knowing auto-approve for real update will install what is essentially a new product, it must be so Microsoft Search can out compete Google Desktop by deploying its software automatically to unwitting users.

I can't automate removal, and I can't turn it off through group policy, but I can half cripple it (as far as Microsoft allows)

Extract the DesktopSearch30.adm file from the installer at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyId=0E0423B4-D396-4986-A1BB-793122FCC65D

Just run the installer EXE setup, it creates a folder in the same directory with the install files, which contains the .adm file, get the file and cancel the installer - theres no need to install this stuff.

To an enforced network wide group policy, add the adm template to the Computer admin config, it adds a few useless controls, no 'Turn of this search bloatware', but you can disable indexing of some locations, not sure if any of these will hide that ghastly toolbar, menu, context pane and menu, systray program etc... At least you can specify the only folder to index as an empty folder, which could speed up indexing time from really slow to just moderatly slow.

I'm extremely upset. We did not approve this update in WSUS and now all of our servers and nearly 100 desktops have this awful Desktop Search installed. It's a resource hog and a I don't want users searching for ANYTHING on their machines. MS: HOW DO I PUSH OUT AN AUTOMATED REMOVAL FOR DESKTOP SEARCH
