Is there a way to burn a regular DVD-R (DL) and play it back in the XBOX 360 and allow using the Network Functions Perhaps a "development" version of it... similar to Toshiba's Emulator (but hopefully costs much less) Been looking for an alternate solution to Toshiba's Emulator.... $15k is kind of high for just an emulator... If there is a development version of the drive, when is it coming out and how do you get one

Thanks

There should be one soon, according to this post. I'm anxious to hear about it as well.

On a similar subject, I recently received a new update to the spec which defines a new security and permissions model separate from AACS. I think this new model could make the testing of FullTrust-mode content easier.

The new system allows content to be signed by any certificate authority (not just the AACS LA). Of course, players will only accept content signed by a trusted authority. But the spec mentions that players can optionally allow users to control which publishers and CAs are trusted. This sounds like a good compromise to me.

Some speculation by me:

One possibility is that a player could allow applications with a certificate that was signed by a regular CA like Verisign. This would prove the identity of the publisher, but not the trustworthiness of the content, so the player could then ask the user if it should trust the publisher. Applications with a certificate signed by a HD DVD-specific CA could run without any prompts (like in the current security model), because in this case the CA would verify that the application is not malicious and create the certificate themselves.

Another option would be for player manufacturers to distribute a special "testing certificate" to developers to allow them to sign their applications for a specific player.

Thanks for the reply. There is a Emulator update on Sonic's site. Its an update for the actual emulator not just the Media Selection Tool. Of course this only applies if you're using Scenarist ACA. I'm not sure if it'll fix your problem, but it is a good idea to update in case you haven't already.

Soon, folks, we hope to tell you something that will help you out. But right now, no, not for Xbox anyway.

What you describe is exactly what the new Application Signing specification allows. The general idea being that set-top boxes will just use the baked-in DVD Forum-approved certificate (and never prompt the user), whilst a PC player in an "advanced" mode (or an emulator) would let the user install random certs for development, sharing self-produced content with friends, etc.

I don't have a paper copy yet! :-(

Hi,

I'm confident that you'll see several affordable, reliable and easy to use solutions for development testing before the end of the year. Solutions that include network debugging features, server side implementation solutions and more.

Best Regards,

Denny B.
