Hey all,

I have just purchased a new Dell XPS m1710 recently. It's been running flawlessly with one minor problem. Any audio coming through output is periodically crackling. I have not really gotten any real answers from Dell Support, so here I am.

I found someone referencing Larry Osterman's blog about the audio stack change in Windows Vista and how it may or may not cause a problem since alot of audio drivers try to use DirectSound ( ). While I am comfortable with computer software and hardware, some of the deeper aspects are still a tad forgien to me.

And I, in turn, will suggest that you ask a different set of eggheads :-) http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx ForumID=351&SiteID=1

This is the audio forum. Larry, among others, can sometimes be found there.

I actually have a Realtek card, and am having the same problem, the sound i have is exactly like an old crack record, you know with the periodic Crackle.

Anyone found anything out that can help us here!

I am a sound engineer with a brand new Dell Lattitude with Windows Vista Business, also experience the crackling sounds.

On my system, it ONLY happens when audio is playing back directly from a CD, or DVD. If I rip audio using Windows Media Player 11 into wav or mp3 or wma formats, the audio plays back with no crackling from the hard drive of the laptop. If I burn this file to a CDR and play it on my home stereo there is no crackling. But if I play it back from the laptop's DVD drive the pops, clicks and glitches come back (randomly).

I have tried every sound setting combination in the control panel (different playback sample rates and bit-depths) with no improvement.

I believe this is a problem ONLY with the drivers for the DVD drives, not a problem with the soundcard drivers (SigmaTel or others) since if it was the soundcard then ALL audio would be affected, not just audio playing off the DVD drive specifically.

I am waiting to try installing uypdated drivers for the DVD drive. Has anyone had the crackling problem for audio played off the hard drive

I have an XPS M1210 (sigmatel audio).

For me the crackle and stutter seems to be more common on things that use cpu or network, like my slingbox player. That said, it happens with everything, even occasionally with system notification sounds. It is not a DVD/CD drive specific problem for me.

The machine shipped with XP, which did not have this problem at all. So, I'm confident that it is not a hardware problem. I did a clean install of Vista. I have installed every BIOS and driver update that I can get my hands on, with no luck.

It really sucks. Otherwise, I really like this machine. This makes me want to avoid Dell next time, though.

Yes, the crackling or popping happens when I play music from the hard drive. I have Windows Vista Home Premium. It happens during CD's and streaming online audio. Is there a patch for this

I'm have almost an identical rig as SmokedBacon's (as well as an identical nameSmile and I'm have the exact same problem. I'd would love to know if anyone finds a fix or workaround for this problem. What was that about the MoBo chipset

Do you have the Dell 1500 Draft N Wireless card I do.

When I go to device manager and disable my wireless card, absolutely all crackling and stuttering goes away. The sound is totally solid. Re-enable it and the problem comes back.

I've seen comments on other forums that seem to indicate a correlation between these... some kind of battle for resources between drivers or something like that

I am glad that I am not the only one. I have been on the phone with Gateway for over an hour and a half trouble shooting. And guess what still crackling. On the other hand, my music plays fine in media at the regular setting. It only crackles when I speed it up which is weird. After hours on the phone, the rep told me that Media 11 only plays music at its regular speed and can't be sped up unless Microsoft helps me to change settings. I called and they wanted to charge $60...no way. Any ideas would be great!

I have had the same exact issue and disabling the Draft N wireless adapter solved my problem too. The guys at dell shipped me a new wireless card 2 weeks ago but it did not solve the problem. I think you're right, it must be some sort of software issue but the guys at dell are totally clueless. I tell you one thing, I'm through talking about this with the "techs" at dell. Last time I called (7/5/2007) and explained the problem, the technician I spoke to (Sabador) was adamant that the issue was my fault and basically ran through his script for troubleshooting audio problems. This included running their diagnostic programs (which I have ran about 15 times already) and verifying that my volume was not set too high . He was not at all interested in hearing about the wireless network card and was very argumentative. Some of those guys really need better training and a better grasp of the English language.

I have the exact same problem (and "solution") with a HP desktop PC and a D-Link USB Draft-N.

Tried 2 different sound cards (internal and a M-Audio firewire) and both XP and Vista drivers for all of them.

This was wokring fine in XP.

Hi, I also have an M1710 and am having audio crackling problems. The issue appears to be with Vista's new Audio system. The Audio System appears to be being temporarily "Starved" of CPU. The Crackiling noise is caused by the skipping of the media being played due to the CPU being used by other tasks.

One of the most noticible ones being Dells Quickset, which uses up exessive power every time it changes the colour or intensity of the LEDs.

The only way to fully fix this problem is to wait for new SigmaTel Audio drivers to be released.

I just purchased a Dell XPS 710 in June 2007. Onboard audio was crackling badly. Bought x-fi card. Didn't help. Re-installed drivers, disabled onboard audio in DM, disabled in BIOS, updated all drivers from Dell and Creative to no avail. Called Dell Tech. They said the mobo had a short. Dell sent a tech to replace mobo. Didn't help, so they sent a brand new XPS. Two weeks later same problem with audio. My brother read this thread so I decided to disable my Linksys Draft-N card and guess what No more problem with the audio, however, I once I enable it to surf the net it resurfaces. I find it hard to believe that the Dell techs do not know what is going on. There is definitely some issue of compatibility with the sound and Draft-N.
