Andriy G.

Hi,

I am using WDS 3.0 RTW, when i want to search something, i will click the 'search' button in deskbar. Normally a explorer with title 'Windows Desktop Search Results' will popup for searching, but sometimes a explorer with title 'C:\' appeared instead (where c:\ is my WinXP installation drive). I don't know when will popup a correct / wrong window for searching, but for my memories it seldom happen. Please provide help if you can.

Thanks~

Andriy G.

Andriy,

Have you unintalled/reinstalled WDS 3.0 a few times There is a known bug in the product that often causes it to open an explorer window with C:\ displayed when you run a search the first time after install. All subsequent searches should open up the appropriate search UI.

I have the same exact problem, gonna try uninstalling and reinstalling.
I think it only happens on the first search after I run the program, but it is annoying anyway.

Reinstalling didn't work.
It sucks because I have 250,000 items to reindex now, takes the computer about 48 hours to redo everything again!!!

This is a known bug and we are still looking into the fix for this. It only happends during the very first run after the install or first logon as a new user. Please let me know if you can consistently getting this error.

Thanks,

Yes, I've been getting this error, not the first run nor the first logon, but throughout the day when I use it.

I noticed if I typed a little slower and wait to hit the return, the problem does not occur. I have disabled the "Desktop quicksearch" and it seemed to reduce the frequency of this annoying bug.

FYI I am having the same problem. It started happening after I upgraded from WDS 3.0 to WDS 3.01. It happens every single time I try to open the search window, regardless of how many times or how fast I type. WDS is now rendered basically useless; very frustrating! I guess I will try uninstalling and reinstalling.

More info on this... I just discovered that if I click Windows Key-F, the WDS window comes up fine. It only opens to c:\ when I try to start a search from the toolbar search box.

For me, it's the opposite.

When I upgraded from WDS 3.0 to 3.01, the problem disappeared!

Hurray! Haven't seen C:\ in a long time!

Yes, this was one of the bug fixes we made in WDS 3.01

Then how come it never occurred for me in 3.0 and only started occurring a few days ago when I updated to 3.01

Do you have any recommendations to fix it Do I need to uninstall 3.01 and reinstall If I do, will I lose my indexes and have to have them rebuilt from scratch

I think uninstalling/reinstalling would be a good idea.
I had a lot of problems with indexing in 3.0, it would take forever and keeps crashing. I reindex after upgrading to 3.01 and it was very smooth.
However, one thing I did notice is sometimes when I do a search it returns double results for the same item, e.g. for one email it would list it twice.
I'm using XP/Outlook 2003 with local .pst files, I do have a large (339,000 items) index, mostly local Outlook mail history.

As Eric pointed out, this issue was fixed if you launched the search window from the deskbar. Are you trying to launch the search window from the windows live toolbar

Re: Windows Desktop Search Development C:\ explorer opened when click 'search' button in deskbar

No, I don't even have the Toolbar installed. I'm running v3.01.6000.72, attempting to do searches from the Deskbar, and every time I try to bring up the WDS window, I get a Windows Explorer window of C:\ instead. So I would disagree that the bug is fixed in WDS 3.01.

Is there anything else I can do to help diagnose the problem Sorry, I'm new here - is this forum monitored by the WDS team; or should I be reporting this to MS

The original problem in 3.0 surfaced only occasionally on the first search performed from the deskbar (subsequent searches were fine).

Has this ever worked on your machine and then suddenly broke, or was this right after install Did you upgrade or clean install

You've reached the right forum; this is monitored by WDS folks.
