I have just made a few test with subtitles and hd-dvd and encountered a strange problem. I tried at first to add subtitles the old fashioned way with bmp files instead of advanced content, the exact same way as with a dvd, since I'm familiar with that. The problem is that the subtitles show up as expected in the simulation environment (Scenarist SCA), but when I playback on the xbox 360 the subtitles are at the wrong position on screen. The correct placement is centered at the bottom of the screen, but during playback the subtitles are placed almost middle and slightly aligned to the left. My project is NTSC 1280 x 720. The timing of the subtitles is at least working as expected .

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are your subtitles using subpicture (like DVD) or bitmaps+markup If the latter, can you post a snippet Your aperture size is set to 1280x720 in the playlist, correct

Noting just as a comment: 1920x1080 PNG subtitles possitioned nicely using Scnerist ACA outputting on the XBOX.

hi,

My subtitles are created with subpictures. Scenarist SCA only creates a HVDVD_TS folder, so I dont have a playlist. What aperture will be used if there is no xpl file

So this is standard-content I'll have to pass, I know very little about CAT1.

Any chance that someone from the CAT1 enginge team reads this forum My post was a bit off topic from the start.

I'm going to attempt to repro your problem. It would help to know the following:

1. Which version of SSCA did you use

2. Did you import the subtitles into Scenarist with at subpicture script, or did you create them in Scenarist

3. What is the size of the subpictures

4. Are you creating 2bpp or 8bpp subpictures

5. What is the display area for the subpictures

6. What is the pixel area for the subpictures

7. Are the subpictures Forced or Non_Forced

8. You said you set the project to "NTSC 1280 x 720". Is that the resolution of your video

9. What resolution is your display

10. How is your Xbox connected to the display (VGA/Component/etc)

11. What is your Current Setting for "Display" on the System blade of the Xbox dashboard

Hi Brandon,

1. Scenarist SCA v4.1.25.0000

2. Import via subpicture script

3. 1280 x 718. Hm, perhaps this should have been 720, but SCA accepted them anyway...

4. 8bpp

5 & 6. Im a bit unsure about these two, but the subs are positioned centered x=640 and y=14 (0,0 lower left corner) and about 20 pixels in height. Perhaps I should have considered a more "title safe" position for the subs.

7. Non_forced. I have to start them via the subtitle button.

8. Yes, video is 1280 x 720

9. 1440 x 900 (widescreen 19")

10. VGA

11. 1280 x 768

Please let me know if you need more info on my settings.

5 & 6 should be in the subpicture script that you used to do the import. It should look similar to the following (your numbers will differ):

Pixel_Area (2 479)

Display_Area (0 2 719 479)

Hi Brandon,

Pixel_Area (0 717)

Display_Area (0 2 1279 719)

I created a project with the same settings in SSCA and was able to verify that the subtitles are displayed in a different position on the Xbox than on the Sonic simulator. However, I also found that when I burned the content and played it on a Toshiba player the subtitles were displayed in the exact same location as the Xbox.

After trying some different scenarios on both players I believe that both the Toshiba and Xbox players are working correctly and that the problem is actually in the Sonic tool. According to the HD DVD specification (section 5.5.3) the HD subpictures can be positioned anywhere within a 1920x1080 display area. This display area is not dependent upon the resolution of the content being displayed. So when you are creating 1280x720 content the display area for subpictures is 1920x1080 and is scaled to the video size. However, SSCA won't allow the subpicture display area to be any larger than the video size (1280x720 in your case), so the positioning is always incorrect when the video size is not 1920x1080.
