    - How to make UI proof middle tier? Just to clarify things here... I agree that the original poster would have meant the middle tier, and understand the question. My point was regarding confusion. I don't see how it is ever good to make the middle tier aware of, or coupled to the UI. Ever. Since WPF and ASP.NET was mentioned I thought that it was relevant to point out that the original poster could be confused about the terminology, especially as a middle tier in a good design, i.e. one that could be service oriented, could be closely coupled to presentation. MVC, and MVPs are absolutely what the poster is asking about, as he asks if we can swap an ASP.NET page with a WPF page, or a silverlight page or whatever. That's the easiest way to do it in my opinion. Technology isn't architecture. Architecture is architecture, driven from requirements. To choose a technology is a different question, one that requires consideration of the architecture, and hence the requirements. How does choosing an technology have anything to do with the UI WCF, WPF, Remoting, DCOM, all technologies that are available to implement an architecture, not patterns. The architecture, the design are all how you use these great technologies to their fullest potential by decoupling them from each other, and reducing dependencies. If you implement a work controller in the client, then that's basically a desktop type application, if you manage it on the server, then it is more like a distributed environment. This is really dependent upon the requirements for the application. And my advice would be to decouple it such that it can be used for either, which is a fairly straight-forward process. With regard to agile development, and switching presentations, if the application is truly decoupled, then you will be able to swap presentation as required. You have to remember though that your ASP.NET application has to be written so it is very thin, and calls into the middle tiers which have the real business logic. The ASP.NET application really should be only concerned with presentation, for it's target platforms (HTML). In this case, the ASP.NET code behind on the server would be, and could be considered a presenter in an MVP, although you could further abstract that into classes if you like. The architecture to seperate presentation from business logic (middle tiers) is the MVP type patterns (reading at martinfowler.com). The architecture to implement your business logic is likely to be composed of a number of patterns and practices patterns that you could use to make your life easier. You wouldn't typically use WCF as a middle tier by itself, it can be used along with WWF to implement workflows, communications and such like, but is very specific to a particular area of the application. These technologies are very good, but by themselves will not automatically leave you with a good architecture or solution ultimately. That's just down to good architecture and design! I hope this clears up a few points, and leaves you with some things to research. If you have more questions, by all means fire me another post, and I'll try and answer it more specifically.     - WDS is slowing down System Performance Guys, I too am having a serious performance problem with Office 2007 on my Windows XP SP2 system. It's a Toshiba Portege M400 with 2GB RAM and a 100GB 7200rpm disk. The system screamed with Office 2003 and Outlook 2003. Now, everytime I boot up Outlook 2007, the system hangs for minutes on end then magically all comes back later. I cannot work like this. I updated all system components from Microsoft, Adobe Acrobat (to v8) and Norton Inet Sec (latest). It's worse than ever. Weird thing is that when I installed Vista on this system on another drive, I had no issues. What is Microsoft doing here I cannot stay on Vista because none of my programs are supported. I too may dump Windows and go with a Mac. No problems there! MS HELP if you care! Please advise...     - Vista-to-Vista WDS Not Querying Remote Index I did some testing and it turns out that there is indeed a bug here. If you share your entire drive you can only do remote queries from the root share, not subfolders. This only affects the scenario where the root of the drive is the share. So one workaround would be to create separate shares for the folders you want to be remotely queryable. Another possibility would be to move those folders under a new folder under the drive's root, and then share that new folder. So you have K:\folder1, K:\folder2 that you want to query remotely. Move folder1 and folder2 under a new folder, Dummy, so you'd have K:\Dummy\folder1, K:\Dummy\folder2. Then you can share out Dummy and still access all files at the same share. The benefit is that you would only have to create one share and could access and query everything remotely through it the same way as before, but the downside is you'd have to move all those files. That probably is "Windows Search" service. You should see if there is a problem with the service starting up or if it is probably disabled. First of all you will need to define the USB/flash drive. If any computer can see it then any computer can read the contents of the drive. If the contents are readable it could be cracked by a brute force attack. If it can not be read by a computer it is probable that someone could extract the chips and read the data directly. This is an important point, if you do not keep control of the hardware all the time it can be compromised! On an hardware level I would say it might be possible to protect it with a password but it could be cracked. The protection is not on the USB flash drive level but when using the data on the USB flash drive.     - Manually Configure URLs Hi all, I need to be able to manually "configure URLs" for documents. I'm not sure how else to word it. Basically, say I have a document "d1" which I get WDS to index. However, I would like to map d1 to URL u1, so that when I search for the document using WDS, I get back u1, and not d1. This would probably be some sort of wrapper around the index, which would perform the mapping between document ID and URL. Is there any way to do this I've looked at the documentation, and I haven't found anything that addresses this issue. Inventory Control applicaton developed in VB6.0 that I am integrating with AgentDesktop I have written three adapters for all the above so that when a new issue is created in CRM web app , it send the "Problem/Issue description" to other apps. They in turn will use the data and manipulate it. The adapter for .Net application works fine. But the VB6.0 adapter is having issues. Using spy++, I found out the ControlID (Which is 00000008).     - One receive port triggering another? We are receiving data files from mainframes which are not locked as they grow or are being transferred. To signal completion of the file transfer, the mainframe writes out a trigger file (signalling its done). Naming convention is <filename>.dat and <filename>.trg How can I use a messaging only solution for picking up the data file With 2 receive ports, the first one has the file mask set to <filename>.trg . Once it find the trigger file, we can be sure the <filename>.dat has stopped growing and ready for pick up. So bascially the first receive port should trigger the second one.     - Software engineering and software architecture resources? Hi Eder, If you are getting into software arch / software engineering this will be the path you should take. 1) Technology- You should already be one. (Java / .NET/ any software that you use to develop software). Keep updating yourself on it. Spend minimum one hour on code. No excuses. 2) Process and methodologies - Yes, is you are not sore about the process you cannot be a good arch. When I mean process I don��t mean that you should master all the KPA of CMMI. But you should know how you should convert the input (Functional spec / use cases / etc) into deliverables. So here you should understand Process like RUP, MSF, XP. Don��t think that one process recommendation will perfectly suit all your projects. Once you have mastered these processes you should be able to draft one for each of your projects. But be sure that the process is implemented and also controlled. Some good resources i have come across for this are Applying UML and Patterns Extreme Programming MSF You should also know about Unit testing, TDD, Refactoring (Martin Flowler) 3) Requirements Analysis You should also master in the skill of Requirements analysis. The Craig Larmans book i specified above should be able to give you enough insight. But you should look into more information of the best practices of business analysis. 4) Quality Attributes Get the list of non functional requirements (Quality Attributes) and prioritize it. You cannot give all that the client wants. Be more specific. (For E.g. for 1000 Concurrent users the latency will be x). You should also know how you will achieve the Quality Attributes. Some of the Quality Attributes that you should master are Performance (Designing for performance, Load testing, stress testing, etc) Security (Threat modeling, etc) Manageability (Domain driven design, Frameworks, Codespewers, ORM Tools etc) Usability Interoperability There is no complete book on this and there never will (at least for the next 20-30 years). The more you are capable to deliver a system with these attributes, you are a great architect. 5) Low level Design This is the interesting part. There are many approaches of doing this. Some references on this are OOAD with Application or try the Head first series on OOAD for a quick shortcut GOF design patterns or try the Head first series on OOAD for a quick shortcut DDD by eric evans or try Jimmy neilsons Applying DDD patterns with example PoEAA by Martin Flowler Database Design Designing objects and then using and ORM tool to create the database schemas can give you more manageability. Designing good database schemas can give you better performance. So you should again weigh things according to your project and also at the expertise you have. Bottom line: as long as you can deliver what the customer has asked you are a great software engineer / Architect 6) High Level Design (The Architecture) Once you have all the above things right your high level design should be fine. The best Reference will be SEIs Software architecture in practice There are also some pattern books like POSA Series which is worth reading 7) Human Dynamics Last but not the lease is Human dynamics. This is the most importance aspect of an architect. It will include things like customer relationship, Leadership, Mentorship, Negotiation, presentation, selling, Etc.     - Suspected Problem using MSAFD: lowering DLL ref count. I support several systems using USB check scanners. There are intermittent USB errors seen while the scanner is idle. These are usually preceeded by the lines in the debug log: MSAFD: Pending APCs in cleanup! Waiting... MSAFD: (cleanup) ... all APCs fired, lowering DLL ref count I am trying to find out if the above entries indicate some sort of problem that could affect IO in other Windows device drivers. The customer has not been able to provide any information as to why these entries are being made on their systems other than they are using TCP/IP to communicate scanned data to their host. I do not see these entries on other customer's systems. Any information as to if the above entries could cause potential problems for other system devices would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! This is very useful as there are not much samples in MSRS SDK specifically about CCR. Your code is also well documented which is great. Could you also make these available in zip I added a link to your page in MSRS wiki under Community Information.

By the way, for those who don't have WinRAR, you can use this command tool to unrar the samples:

1) Download RAR (DOS & OS/2)

2) Copy the downloaded file (rarx360.exe) somewhere on your hard disk and run it to extract the files.

3) Download CCR samples from Ruslan's blog.

4) Decompress the CCR samples with this command: rar32 x ccr.samples.rar
