I have WDS 3.0.1 and some 200.000 PDF files to index ( text only ) and it might grow in the future.

My own tunning is :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gathering Manager\DisableBackOff = 1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gathering Manager\PerformanceLevel = 5

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\SearchService\Performance = 5

Which are the registry entries to modify in order to grow the indexing speed since the actual rate is around 1 file per sec and the HDD LED is blinking once every 10 seconds and following the same behaviour, the CPU usage gets to 40% and instatly gets down to 5-10 %.

It looks more like a "peak indexing" and wait for something ( i guess is a plug-in thread that does not die as fast as it should ).

Thank you.

Re: Windows Desktop Search Development How to tune WDS to index faster ?

Self reply ...

I found the problem that caused this strange behaviour of the WDS.

The Adobe Reader 7.0 text filter must have a problem because after installing Adobe Reader 8.0 the WDS started to index like never before ( indexing speed is around 300 documents / min ) and the CPU is around 60% - 40% and the HDD LED is always on. ( CPU = 3.4GHz Dual Core, HDD = 1.2 TeraBytes ).

Yes, there was an issue with the previous pdf filter which would hang indexing the document. They have fixed this issue in version 8. PostID=1181098&SiteID=1
