Can Anyone tell me how compatible it is going to be with previous versions of Windows.

Ok perhaps I was too vague, Windows Vienna is the successor of Windows Vista which Microsoft has already begun planning for. It is said to be a "new generation of operating systems". And that Microsoft will "start from scratch" because of the clutter Microsoft Windows currently has.

I think you mean "successor". Windows Vista's predecessor would be Windows XP.

I am not on the Windows team, but I can tell you it is VERY early in the planning stages for Vienna and any rumors you here are probably just that. It's probably not even worth speculation at this time. Just enjoy Windows Vista.

Yea it ll be unworthy thinking about it right now.. as vista is onto the stage and started rocking.
but we can surely expect vienna in 3-5 years i think..probably it might launch with DirectX 11 and by the time probably grafic cards with 2gb vram on a single card might come out..
woooo, thats lot of imagination.. but we could hope it.. coz its MICROSOFT

"Just enjoy Windows Vista."

Vista is pretty enjoyable. However, I have PTSD anytime I try to do anything complicated with office 2007. Everything is soooooo user friendly that I can't get much from it.

I'll believe it when I see it. Starting from scratch is cool and all, but customer requirements will take priority.

After being incredibly successful with VAX/VMS, Digital undertook development of a new operating system code name "Prism" with a matching processor for Prism. The project was going successfully for about two year with Dave Cutler as the lead architect at which time Digital canceled the project. Cutler and Many of the people went to MS and developed Windows NT for "new technology". How curious it was that Just as you subtract 1 From HAL in 2001: A Space Odessy the result is IBM. If you do the same with WNT, the result is VMS.

VMS used all native images, there was not such thing as the COM issues windows has. Making a new operating system and starting from scratch was not deemed feasible for Digital who didn't have nearly the problems that Microsoft would unless it was clear that this was a system which made little effort to support legacy software.

When I really stop and think about it, what would be the goals of a totally new start

This site will give you a good forecast of Windows 7, it did very well for Vista.
