We have a client-server application with .html and .pdf content on the server that we would like to search from the clients. The numerous clients being XP and Vista machines. We are considering WDS due to its integration into Vista (= no deployment.)

The Desktop element of WDS is casting doubt in my mind. What we really want is a server-side search Is such a product out there Is there more to WDS that searching my drive for files.

Is the enterprise version just the WDS version geared for enterprise deployment - I am a bit confused...

I understand WDS can be configured to search a specific folder. In our case, the application content on the server. However we do not want to impose this configuration on the clients if our content appears when the user performs a search outside of our application.

A shared index on the server would be ideal but I understand this is not available in WDS Any hint if, when

We are using .NET 3.0 and IIS. Any advice would be appreciated for a developer newbie to searches

Thanks,

Re: Windows Desktop Search Development Is WDS suitable for client-server applications?

I think the requirements you describe would fall under our SharePoint product. The sharepoint server will manage and index your departmental documents. You can access the documents using WebDAV and your client can query it using WebServices.

Hello,

I'm trying to do something like this, but I'm not shure if it's possible yet. Although there is another topic here that says it's possible and it's been done (I think it's what you need).

I hope it helps...
