Hi all,

I would have thought this was a simple problem to solve but it's causing all sorts of problems.

I have a seperate networked pc which stores all the MyDocuments folders for all the users (thus facilitating easy backups) but Visual Basic 2005 Express does not seem to like this setup.

I see it is possible to change the location in the 'Options' for projects & templates but it still continues to write the setting file (and some other stuff eg backups) to the MyDocuments location.

Following a 'How Do I...' tutorial on creating myFirstDatabase after a long pause during which the screen is frozen it comes up with the message 'Unable to create blah blah' and suggests that it's because of a remote/network connection.

Is there a way to tell VB 2005 to use an alternate location ie other than MyDocuments exclusively

Visual Studio does not support remote paths for projects and you'll need to have a local copy installed somewhere.

My VB 2005 IS installed on my local hard drive, and i've already changed the options settings to point to my local hard drive.

My problem is that VB 2005 Express continues to insist on storing stuff in MyDocuments. Hence my question, is it possible to tell the program to use a different (and hence local) folder for it's settings/backups/etc

Can anyone answer this please.

The problem it appears to cause is that i am not able create a database, even when following a tutorial to do so, from within VB 2005 Express.

All i need to know is a yes/no - that is, can VB 2005 Express be told to NOT use the MyDocuments folder and use a different location (ie c:\vb2005) etc for it's settings file and/or the backup folders etc

Thanks in advance.

Well i got round the creation of the database by enabling the TCP/IP setting in SQL Express Configuration Manager.

However i would still like to keep all my projects and application settings on my local hard drive. Projects i've done in the 'options' of VB2005 Ex but is it possible (as above)

Anyone

Well it would seem that if you store your My Documents on a remote pc (as i do) then you cannot run Visual Basic 2005 Express and expect to connect to the Msql server !

When installing said programs you are not prompted for a location for the settings files etc, it WILL put them in your MyDocuments folder, therefore making sure that you cannot connect to the database from within your projects !

Although from within VB 2005 you can change the paths for storing your projects, you CANNOT change the store location for the setting files etc.

As this post has received absolutely no response of any use from anyone who actually knows the answer, we can only assume that the Express versions are so severely limited that you (or in this case, I) would have to completely reconfigure my pc in order to run this program.

So next question: How do i safely uninstall everything that was installed with VB2005 Express Is there a specific order that i must follow or do i just go to 'Add/Remove Programs' and start clicking stuff
