I am trying to connect an Access database as usual. But when I do I don't get the browse option for the database file when i choose access database in the Add Connection window. It just gives me a window with a blank space for connection string under Misc properties. I don't know exactly what to put there, I have tried a few things but always get an error of inconformity to index 0.

This has not happened in my first installation of VB Express. I've searched google for this and found a few posts asking for help on the same problem but no exact solution. Any help here are screen shots of what happens:

I've just followed your steps in VBExp but I got a textbox under the providor with the familar navigator to browse files. All I can suggest is this:

1. Did you get to this screen by clickiing on a databound control like a grid and say add new datasource, if so this is strange, if not I'd like to know how you go the screen, it could be a bug Smile

2. You could just go to the database explorer set up the connection from there and then copy paste the string in

Awaiting your reply ....

Thanks for replying. I created a new project and before doing anything I clicked the data sources besides the solution explorer tab. I then click Add new data source and the rest is as i told above. I have also tried adding a data source to a datagrid view and still get the same problem.

Database Explorer shows the same empty connection string window. Even if I paste working string in the connection string window that appears I still get the "Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0" error.

Im at a roadblock as to what to do. Ive reinstalled numerous times, I even tried the 2008 beta 2 and still get the same window whenever I use the wizard to add an access database. I have tested the SQL server option and it works fine, the problem is I NEED to connect to an access database. I even reinstalled my Office installation thinking that something was wrong with my Access. I updated everything, msxml, .net framework. I deleted the registry entries for vb express initializations but nothings changed. The only option I could think of is reinstalling a fresh OS, but that is not an option as my OS is OEM.

If I manually code everything it works ok. Of course Id rather have the wizards work as I am fairly new...

You need an MS Access Data Base first

Create one with Access

Re: Visual Basic Express Edition problem with data source configuration wizard

I already have one. ^_^ problem is, I can't browse for it, nor can I enter a connection string in the window that appears (I can actually but it gives me an error).

You have something not installed reinstall Access

Re: Visual Basic Express Edition problem with data source configuration wizard

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have already tried reinstalling Access, my first install was a custom install and now I opted for the complete install. No change. Besides, VB Express is supposed to be able to work with Access dbs even without Access installed (based on MSDN walkthroughs) so I don't think the issue lies there.

No they don't lie (that sure)

But I'm working with it fine, but in the Control Panel > Administrative tools > there's ODBC Data Source (Verify if it exist !!)

You may take a look maybe find something to correct

Thanks. It's there, I don't know what to do with it, though =P

Ok may be you need to tune some settings ! Don't know much how to use it but try !

Still no luck. Im just going to have to learn to do things manually.

That's better and more customizable

And that don't need much effort or code to write
