I'm hoping that I'm just being dense, but after searching both the forums and msdn, I cannot locate a real download for the VBExpress installer.

I am coming to the conclusion that it does not exist. Is this true

I'm at my parents house with cra**y dialup, so I'm not going to take the several days necessary to download a 400 mb CD. Additionally, I want to have the install, so that when I reinstall windows here (which I'm going to have to do soon) I won't have to download it again. Also, I'd like to take the setup program back to my house and install it there (where I'll actually use it more).

TIA

I'm sorry, please answer the question that I asked, not the question you wished I asked.

Figo, http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/ provides the 3 megabyte Download Manager for VBExpress, not the 36 megabyte instller that I asked about.

Try downloading it and see how large it is (or even try installing it and see if it doesn't claim to be downloading VBExpress), then go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/troubleshooting/ and see if there is any mention of how to download it when BITS is not working.

But maybe it's my fault, maybe I'm not specific enough.

So let my try again.

I am looking for the 36 Megabyte install program for VBExpress. I have looked in all the following places, so unless I missed something, links pointing to them will not answer my question:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/troubleshooting/

Another page that does not hold the answer for what I seek is this one:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

It seems that Microsoft actually admits that there may be times when a download manager will not satisfy the requirements of their users, and so provide links to download the entire CD's for VBE, VWDE, VCS, VCC and VJS. I admit that having this stuff is nice, but a 450 megabyte download over dialup would take upwards of 15 days (unless you don't see a problem with tying up the phone line 24 hours a day, in which case I can cut the download time to 5 days, still not exactly 'Express', is it )

I can't believe that I'm the only person on the internet who wants the 36 meg install program. Is it really that unreasonable of me to ask for it

And before anyone challanges me by saying it's unnessicary, even though I shouldn't have to justify what I want, I will (again):

Actually, I found the following disheartening quote on the ISO page that implies that "Manual Installation" of the Express stuff requires downloading the CD. Hardly what I'd call 'Express'.

Visual Studio Express Manual Installation Instructions wrote:

Below are the steps required to manually install an Express Edition:

<snip>

Download the Express Edition Image (img) file

<snip>

To install the image directly from your hard drive you will need to install 3rd party software that is capable of understanding *.img file extensions.

<snip>

[Using] IsoBuster setup, make sure to select the ˇ°(*.IMG) Image filesˇ± file extensions to associate IsoBuster with img file extensions.

<snip>

Double click on the img file to start IsoBuster.

<snip>

Select all the files in the right hand side by clicking CTRL+A:

<snip>

Click the ˇ°Extract Objectsˇ± option in the context menu.

<snip>

Next, select the folder to extract the contents of the image file as shown below and click OK.

<snip>

Extracting the contents from the image file typically takes five minutes.

<snip>

After the extraction process is complete, navigate to the directory you chose to extract the files in the previous step and click the setup.exe file to begin the Express Edition installer.

If you encounter issues installing the Express Editions, please visit the Express Forums and report your issue for more assistance.

Thank you for your time

Re: Installing and Registering Visual Studio Express Editions Where can I download the VBExpress setup from? NOT the download manager, NOT the CD.

Hi, James

The recommended option for installing Express Editions is to use the bootstrapper installer that is available via the link http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/downloads/ for each Express Edition.

If the bootstrapper installer fails to install on your computer because of networking problems, or if you want to download a full copy of an Express Edition to burn on CD, then please follow the manual installation instructions:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

After following the manual installation instructions, please be sure to register your copy of Express. You'll get a lot of free stuff such as royalty-free images from Corbis, icons from IconBuffet, and e-books from Microsoft Press. Learn more about registration benefits.

If your problem is about your net condition, I think you'd use some Resume broken downloads software.

Thanks

I agree 100% and more with you Jim. I also live in a very rural area where there is NO broadband available at home. It would be nice if companies would realize that there are still areas where multi MB, always on, internet connections just don't exist. I too have been looking for the installs and placing a 450+ MB iso image for a 35 MB file is pretty ridiculous. More interested in the marketing than actual development process.
