Hi,

I can log-in to SQl Server Express using Windows authentification.

It fails when I use SQL server authentification.

The help says to set-up user password in NT security.

I am using XP Professional, opended the User account but could not see anything to set up a SQL login

Can anyone point out the solution

Thanks

Clive

Connect "Object Explorer" to your SQLExpress database on SQL Server Management Studio

Ritht click the Server Name

Click Properties

Select Security on the Left NAV pane

Select the option button "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode" on The Server Authentication Section

Click OK..

Try now..

In SQL Server when you want to use both Windows and SQL Server authentication you have to configure SQL Server to use both and to setup SQL authentication SQL Server will ask you to add a user name and password that it will use for authentication. So SQL Authectication is an account and password you pass into SQL Server for future use, it is not created or known by Windows. Post again if you still need help.

Hi,

Thanks that as very useful.

I can log in using windows verification.

When I use the same log-in for SQL server authentification, it fails.

Error 18456

What log-in am I meant to use here OR how to set it up

Thanks

Clive

That error just means you don't have permissions under SQL Authentication, you have Windows Authentication so the SA(system Admin) account is disabled. Now you have to change SQL Server to mixed authentication mode but the SA account will still be disabled, you have to enable it and add password. That password is what you use when you use SQL Authentication. There are two ways to do that and both are covered by Microsoft in the link below. Hope this helps.
