Can anyone tell me how a program like excel handles formulas.

From what i can see it looks like it stores the formulas somewhere away from the database. How does this work

Or am i even close

Can someone tell me how to create something similar

Thanks ReneeC

This has atleast put me in the right direction.

I hope so ! I have my fingers crosed and I do think it's the right direction. The script control is the interpretive part.

Right now i am looking into using spreadsheets as a math engine to bring calculations to my cells.

Do you anything about this

wish I could help, but the more "management-like" a tool is, it's very predictable that I won't know much about it.

if i wanted to store the value in a particular cell, how would i do that

Dim cell1 as integer

cell1=Me.MaintableDataGridView.Rows(0).Cells(0).value

or would i use .formatted value instead of .value

What i am after is a way to do something similar without having to declare every single cell.

I would have to declare approximately 40,000 cells.

This isn't exactly what i am looking for but it did spark some thoughts to withhold formulas from my spreadsheet and hard code them to use only when my app is running.

Thanks for the spark.

what I was looking at was the initalization of variables and writing the document.

Yes, I understand. This gave me the idea to use my spreadsheet differently.

I started using Spreadsheet Gear for .net 2006 yesterday and it works great.

It gives you the power (almost as good as excel) to use spreadsheets in a view on a form.

You can create spreadsheets and then use them in your app to do all the calculations that are so difficult in a datagrid.

The only drawback is that when you need to store changes made by your end user you have to save it as an excel file.

This is ok but then you have to worry about them finding the file and taking your hard work and copying it for their own purpose.

The thread gave me the idea to code the formulas that i worked hard on and leave the spreadsheet with only text.

Basicly it would be useless by itself unless someone really wanted to take the time to add the formulas back in.

I figure if they want it that bad then so be it. The Spreadsheet Gear Tech's suggested using Encryption API but that is way beyond my skills at the moment. I don't even know where to begin.

Thanks for the indirect help.
