What MASM and where did you get it

If it integrates with Visual Studio, it probably does not integrate with the Express Edition. The Express Editions do not accept plug-ins and integration of additional languages and tools the way the full-up Visual Studio does.

Can the MASM you have be installed for stand-alone operation (probably via command-line) Or must there be a Visual Studio for integration

Please see the following URL for a version of MASM which lists Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition as a prerequisite:

Microsoft Macro Assembler 8.0 (MASM) Package (x86)

Wow, there it is. Well, I guess it has to be reported as a bug to someone. According to this thread, the problem may be that the MASM installer only works against the English (en_US ) version of the Express Edition. The next problem, of course, is learning how to use it.

With respect your first post did not state where you obtained MASM.

In order to check the information i gave, i have downloaded from the link i presented and successfully installed MASM with no errors or warning, i have Visual C++ Express (English) and the platform SDK installed.
The MASM executable (ml.exe) now resides in my "\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\bin" directory.

May i suggest you download MASM once more, using the link presented and try again.
