I found a similar post which might have a possible solution. You can view the full post here: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=185102&SiteID=1

"I believe the problem is caused by the Indexing Service locking the obj and bin files, trying to reindex their contents. Simply select your Projects folder in Explorer, go to Properties..., click the Advanced button and disable the checkbox to allow the indexing of the folder and subdirectories and files. "

If this doesn't work ping me and I can try to find out next steps to resolve your issue.

Thanks.

thank you for your help.

I try your solution but nothing change.
I switch of indexing on all the disk too.

You must know that error happens always : When I start a new project and also whan I open an old project.

Hell,

Has anyone a resolution oin this problem yet

I have been happily developing in VB.Net (with VS2005) for months now - and now this error has just started

I am dead in the water as I cannot modify any form layouts ('ause I can;t see them! ;-)).

I have tried the following without success.

- deleted file in obj and bin directories

- rebuild clean

- rebuild all

Any advice would be VERY MUCH appreciated.

No true resolution ....

My last way : format the disk and reinstall ....

Thank You Olivier,

I spelt a whole day searching the web, uninstalling and reinsatalling VS before I had to conceed that I had no hope. Then spent the next 2 days reloading WInXP and all the apps, Vursud Checker, Email and ALL THOUGH XP 'Updates'

Just to get 'reset' a problm in one application (VS2005) !!

But I still have no idea why the prblme happened and MORE IMPORTANTLY - What to do to prevent it form happening again.

I appreciate that it might be a difficult problem for Microsoft to reproduce but surely tehy could use _us_ and our broken systems to provide more information on the problem !

The error messages indiacte a problem with the registry - a corrupted key perhaps But which one

I for one would have been happy to run any dignostic utility (or any other test) that MS needed to get more info but why has Microsoft been so quiet on this Especially, considering this is an MSDN NG run by Microsoft!

Pitty.

Thanks for reporting this issue.

I understand from your posts, that you formatted and reinstalled the machine that had the issue.

If either of you have a project that recreates the problem, would you be willing to share it with the WinForms Designer team If it happens on all projects on that machine, but the same projects work on another machine, would you be willing to run a tool that will profile the issue in VS 2005 (much like the crash reporting dialog)

Please reply to this thread if you are able to recreate the problem.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting back to us on this - unfortunately (as I said in my previous email) the problem is now 'fixed' aftern having reformatted and reinstalled.

I would be very much interested in running any tool that might help to diagnose the problem should it reoccur.

FWIW - some responses to your questions -

1. All project in the machine were affected

2. did not try the project on anther machine

3.When the machine was rebuilt the 'problem' projects worked.

Hi all. Found this thread and I thought I would add to it rather than starting a new one. I am currently having this issue in all of my projects that I have converted from VS 2003. Has anyone found an issue for it yet

I have spent the whole day looking for help on the web but can't find anything that works.

The link posted by Westin Hutchins above is not the same error.  The error needs to contain this exact callstack for it to be the same error:

at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32Error(Int32 errorCode, String str)
at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.GetValueNames()
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Design.WindowPaneProviderService.AppendWindowPanes(RegistryKey parentKey, ArrayList windowPanes)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Design.WindowPaneProviderService.GetRegisteredPanes(String extension)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Design.WindowPaneProviderService.CreateWindowPane(DesignSurface surface)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design.Serialization.CodeDom.DeferrableWindowPaneProviderService.CreateWindowPane(DesignSurface surface)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design.Serialization.CodeDom.DeferrableWindowPaneProviderService.DeferredWindowPane.EnsurePane()

For anyone who's getting that, could you see if you have the following registry key/data:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ViewAdapters]
"Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop.IOleDocument, Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop, Version=7.1.40304.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"="Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design.PassthroughWindowPane, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"
"System.Windows.Forms.Control, System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"="Microsoft.VisualStudio.Windows.Forms.WinformsWindowPane, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"

Check for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ViewAdapters, and see if it contains the two non default values above.  If you're missing those or they have different values, you can try clearing out any existing ViewAdapaters key in that path and importing the key I put up there (copy the yellow text above, paste it into notepad, save the file with a .reg extension, and run it).

I am now getting the error below on any project that uses WinForms. Visual Studio 05 was working fine until I installed WindowsR Server 2003 R2 Platform SDK this morning. There was an option to change some enviromental variables. The install warned that it could cause problems if that option was selected to I left it at it's default which was not to change them. I uninstalled the SDK and it did not undo the problem. I backed up the ViewAdapters branch, deleted it, then installed the registry key above and it did not fix the problem either. I've repeated the reg key process twice now and noticed that after I installed the .reg file that there was still only one key in the folder, not two as the post seems to indicate would be there. It says "see if it contains the two non default values above".

The this is the data that was in the registry branch I before I modified anything:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ViewAdapters]
"Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop.IOleDocument, Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop, Version=7.1.40304.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"="Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design.PassthroughWindowPane, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Design, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I know there is only one version of VS2005 out but just in case, this is what I am running.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727

This is the error that I am getting in Visual Studio when I try and view a form.

I'm not sure why running the reg key above after deleting the original one would leave you with just 1 reg key and not 2. What if you add the second one manually

Re: Installing and Registering Visual Studio Express Editions form design error

thackman

I tried to add the second key and it says that a key by that name already exists. I only see one key, the first one. It is possible that I am miss reading what I should be entering in for the Name and String Value.

I think that the following is supposed to be the name:

System.Windows.Forms.Control, System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089

and that this is supposed to be the string value of the second key.

Microsoft.VisualStudio.Windows.Forms.WinformsWindowPane, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a

To create the key I am using New->String value. I am getting the message "The Registry Editor cannot rename New Value #1. The specified value name already exists. Type another name and try again. Is this the correct process or should this be a multistring or expandable string

I'm going to give this forum a chance to identify the problem but if I can't get anywhere by tomorrow afternoon I'm going to have to try System Restore.

Re: Installing and Registering Visual Studio Express Editions form design error

WilliamVespe

My registry contained the values as listed. To be sure, I removed them from the registry and imported your keys. This did not fix the issue. I am receiving the error message as you have it typed.

Any other ideas

William
