Just installed Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition. What happened to the Show All Files option that is in Visual Studio 2003 In 2003 it was on the project menu and an icon on the top of the solution explorer pane when the project was selected. It's in neither place in 2005. How can I show all the files (like the References and Bin folders)

Hi John,

I don't use VBE, I use VS2005 Team Suite. But my team suite has the exact icon you describe. If it's not in VBE it's a deliberate limitation of the IDE.

Hi John,

Welcome to MSDN forums!

I have tried the following:

No matter what Visual Studio Edition (2003, 2005 or Express), to any Windows project, the Show All Files menu-item/option is available.

But "Show All Files" is not shown in a Web Site Project (which has no Bin folder by default), because it's not needed and all files are already shown in the Solution Explorer.

Why is the show all files button disabled in the solution for my Web project

By the way, here is the Web Developer Express forum.
Regards,
Martin

I must agree with John 81. Show All Files is not stable. Sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not. After fooling around with the solution explorer clicking here and there you can usually make your files visible, but it is simply not stable. I have also noticed that sometimes the menus to build an application are gone even though all files are OK. It seems that menus and icons comes and goes without any reason.

Microsoft has tried to be intelligent, but has not succeeded. It would be much better with a steady menu and icon system - especially because a vital function like Save-Project-As is missing, so the only way to make a new workable version of an existing project is to copy and paste the code from the old project to the new one, but sometimes it is very hard to bring forward the code for the designer. You can drag-and-drop edit the file (WYSIWYG), but not bring forward the code so that you can replace it with the code from the old project. After numerous clicks here and there, I usually succeed, but it is a terrible system. I know that it is not recommended to edit the designer file by hand, but it is extremely irritating to have to build your entier UI again in the designer just because you want to make a new version.

Martin, Show All Files isn't disabled, the icon isn't there at all.

After working with VS 2005 Express for a day, I'm going to guess that Show All Files it isn't needed in 2005. Unlike VS 2003, the .vb code behind file is show by default. Also, the bin folder, which was hidden in 2003, is not used in 2005.

Maybe I'm wrong about this and it's just not in the Express edition as Renee said.

Thank you John and Carsten for your feedback!

I didn't still reproduce this issue about the unsteady "Show All Files" menu and icon. I think it has something to do with IDE. I would like to suggest installing Visual Studio Express Edition from the official website.

Visual StudioR 2005 Express Editions

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa975050.aspx

By the way, here is Visual StudioR 2005 Express Editions Service Pack 1, it's not required.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyId=7B0B0339-613A-46E6-AB4D-080D4D4A8C4E&displaylang=en

If this issue still occurs, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,

So you're saying I should be seeing the "Show All Files" icon in the Express edition

Where else would I download and install Visual Studio except from the official web site Just for chuckles, I downloaded and installed it again. I still don't have the "Show All Files" icon.

Service Pack 1 is installed.

John

For the moment, my Show-All-Files is there . It is located in the solution explorer Window.
