Compiler bug: long is incompatible with int and __int32 It's none of them.
The __w64 modifier does nothing in this case, it is there to warn if there are bits of your code which could cause problems on 64 bit builds.
The compiler and the documentation is working just the way they are supposed to. What is happening here is the C++ strict type checking. Even though they are both 4 bytes long in memory, to the compiler they are different types. You have to explicitly cast to the different types otherwise you will have the compiler error.
You can also see this at work with unsigned short and wchar_t, unsigned two byte variables but you can't convert without casting. Also another amusing one is the CRT size_t and unsigned int, even though size_t is typedefd as unsigned int, because it is a different type it will come up with these problems.
This is an attempt at safer programming in C++, in essence you should know what you are doing before you can convert. In C you could come up with some interesting problems because there was very little type checking but in C++ an attempt was made to fix it.
