Here are what I am planning to do until some fix is coming or some magical options being discovered. For creating mixed static library ... [1] WheneverI need C-like functions rather than class object (like mini tool), I think I can separate the definition out of the header file. (So I will have function declaration in header namespace, definition in source files) [2] When I really need some class object requires .NET classes inside it (I have to create some ref class in this case), I will create them as C# style. (Putting all definitions in the C++ header file) By doing [1] and [2], my apps (whether it is "main(int, char**)" form or "main(array<System: tring ^> ^args)" form) will not have big problems in linking. Runtime behavior has not been investigated yet (I hope I am not getting a bomb by the CLR in the middle of exe runs), but time will tell. I am just stunned how this simple thing makes incredible complexity to the linker. Especially when the maker of the OS is same as the C++/CLI language syntax creator.     - Printing strings of TCHAR[] into a file Hi tester_abc, if you want to write Unicode text data to a file, you should choose an encoding for Unicode (there are some options, like UTF-8, and UTF-16LE, etc.) Personally, I like using UTF-8 as encoding out of the bounds of the application, and UTF-16 inside the app. This is because Unicode UTF-16 is Windows "natural" default Unicode encoding format. So, I think that it makes sense to use this Unicode format in Widows apps. But UTF-16 has some problems, like the endiannes of the host machine, (UTF-8 is just UTF-8, there is no UTF-8 big-endian or UTF-8 little-endian; on the other sinde, there are UTF-16LE and UTF-16BE...), etc. So, I prefer using UTF-8 *outside* the app , e.g. when saving text data to an external file, or when sending that data across the net. Note that UTF-8 is kind of the Unicode de facto standard for the Web. So, I like storing or sending Unicode text data as UTF-8 out of the app, and this data is converted to UTF-16 on app's bounds . VC 2005 is confusing and such in some ways. Your comments however are too general. If you just want to express frustration then you have done that. I'm using: pid = _spawnlp (_P_NOWAIT, cmd, buf->data, NULL) to start a background process and need help to check if the initialisation of the process fails. _spawnlp allready return an error if something happen during startup like cmd is missing but i want to wait for ~ 0.1 sec and just check for the pid still exists. the problem is that _cwait is blocking until the process is finished. under unix I'm using: waitpid (pid, NULL, WNOHANG) with: WNOHANG The waitpid() function will not suspend exe- cution of the calling process if status is not immediately available for one of the child processes specified by pid. how can I check I the process still exists with only the pid as argument -> thanks for help mfg Andreas Otto Tag: Visual C++ Language Compiler directive to allow use of deprecated items? In the comparisons you'll notice once you get to the 0x00 in the source the resultant file is wrong. Don't use C string functions to handle binary data like that.     - Makefile project linking broken in Visual Studio 2005? In Visual Studio 2003 and earlier, you could make Visual Studio projects link against the output of a makefile project by setting the Output line. In VS2005 this seems to be broken. Is there something you have to do to get this to work One of the projects I have run into has a work around for this issue by making a separate library project with no files in it, that depends on the makefile project. To get the output of the makefile project to link in, it adds the output of the makefile project to the "Additional Dependencies" line in the separate empty library project. Any upstream libraries then need to depend on the empty library project instead of the makefile project. But this means you have to author 2 project files for every external library. There's nothing preventing you from using deprecated items, granted that they are still available in header files and libraries. Do you wish to remove the warnings as well
