- compiler problem You need to create a solution before the IDE will build the code. You can do this through File->New Project. Make sure you chose Visual C++ Win32 Console Application and then add your code file to the resulting project. This can be done through right clicking on solution explorer then going to Add->Existing File and then point the dialog box to your code file. Of course, if you are writing a GUI app then you should choose Visual C++ Win32 Project. But since you said you were learning I assumed you wanted the console. The information you provide that is not about C++ might be helpful but it is difficult for me to understand what you are saying about C++. I am not familiar with the CLI/CLR stuff so I can't be sure if DoEvents is part of that but DoEvents is deffinitely not part of the C++ language. I cannot be sure if the DoEvents you are using works well with multithreading but I doubt that it is a good solution. DoEvents was and is a VB thing to allow VB programmers to do things they could not do due to limited access to Windows. A C++ programmer can use the Windows API directly and fully. So the solution to your problem is likely to do things the Windows API way. DoEvents is not multithreading. You don't need DoEvents to do multithreading. - Visual Studio compatibility with GNU GCC I presume you mean compatibility between the Visual C++ Compiler and the GNU C++ compiler. If so then there is no automatic way to achieve compatibility - especially as both compilers are under continual development. - Memory mapped file size limit This is not a VC Language question; it is a Windows question that should be asked in a Windows newsgroup or a forum in a programming site in which this is within the scope of the forum. My guess is that it would be quite difficult for Windows to obtain 1 GB of contiguous memory, even for virtual storage. It is probably just not possible, regardlous of available resources. I think there is a way to get an additional 2 GB of memory space for a total of 6 GB but if so then that is an option that is not provided by default, at least not for client versions of XP and before. - About ToolTips Hi, In my Doc/View application View is derived from CFormView. And my dialog heirarchy is like this: There are several dialogs x1,x2 ..etc which is child of parent "y" and y contains buttons which acts as tabs. "y" is a child of dialog "z" which has another child dialog y1 z is child of main view or main window. In X1,X2... etc many controls are there which has tooltips and one of them has OnOK(). But tooltips of these dialogs are not appearing at the runtime.but tooltips of controls which are placed in y and y1 are appearing at runtime. z doesnt have any controls and main window has some controls which shows the tooltips. Same code is written for dialog x1,x2... etc. Can u please suggest the solution for this. AND As i told that one of the dialog has a OnOK(). But when i am pressing ENTER key it wont call OnOK(). if i make the property of dialog CONTROLPARENT=FALSE and CONTROL is false it will call OnOk(). - What factors go into link and start-up time? With startup times, you should only look at release builds, not debug builds. For debug builds the startup times can be huge because a large amount of debug code is loaded and jitted at startup. If release builds are still slow, you can use ngen to pre-jit the assemblies so that the jitting is already done when you start the application. For link times, everything you mention will increase build times. increased dependencies will trigger rebuilds of all the projects that depend on a changed project. RTTI will make things slower. Mixed mode builds of C++ apps take longer, and if I remember correctly, incremental linking is disabled for mixed mode C++ projects.
