The client calls the COM dll and the COM dll in turn calls the C dll. When you use implicit linking ( to the C dll) your COM dll registers OK and when you use explicit linking (dynamic linking) you are unable to register the COM dll. When regsvr32 is called the target dll and it's dependencies are loaded. AFAIK dynamic linking does not count as a dependency in this context. So this is perplexing indeed. You can try the following : 1) Since the error message says : error PRJ0050: Failed to register output. Please ensure you have the appropriate permissions to modify the registry. Check if you have the neceszsary permissions. 2) Try building the dll and calling regsvr32 manually instead of using the IDE. Check if you get the same response. 3) Try checking your COM dll's dependencies using Depends.exe; this may throw some light on the issue.     - Doubly Linked Lists Well I took a look at the Systems::Collections and ::Generic, I tried to use the LinkedList object, but I hit an error... :( LinkedList<Spell> spellbook; Firstly unlike other STLs like vectors this LinkedList did not like my Spell structure, and to top that it is not being accepted because the object that I am using to hold this varaible is native, so it can't use any of the system namespace stuff, and I cant use STL because it does not seem to work with my windows forms stuff.     - Visual C++ Path I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I find it funny how many people start learning programming because they want to make games. Unfortunatelly, as a beginner, it's hard to understand that games programming is a dificult task, because a game is a complex program (well, that also depends on what kind of game). Games like the ones you play at home or with your friends were developed by teams that put months or years into them. What I'm trying to say is that learning basic stuff like structs, functions or STL isn't enought to build games. My recommendation is that before you start thinking about that you learn very well at least C++, graphics programming, networking. However this just goes to further point out the fact that the C++ Form serialization and deserialization need to be fixed.     - CRT assembly versions confusion :8.0.50608.0 vs 8.0.50727.42 That's only part of the story. The way it works for applocal is that the version number embedded in your application EXEs and DLLs has to match the version number that is contained in the applocal Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest file. So for example, on a clean machine with nothing in the WinSxS folder: Myapp.exe and mydll.dll contain an embedded 8.0.50508.0 reference The copied Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest file must also contain the version number 8.0.50608.0. The CRT DLLs contained in the same folder as the manifest file can be of any version number (in my experience). As to your question about the confusing versioning 8.0.50608.0 instead of the proper version number, I think that the original idea was that any beta app already built and shipped (on golive license) would automatically redirect to the RTM version through policies. But I think they must have forgot to change the _CRT_ASSEMBLY_VERSION in the CRT source code to 8.0.50727.42 before building for RTM versions. Luckily though, it seems to work, even with the old version number. Unfortunately though, the same story cannot be said for MFC80LOC DLLs in SP1.     - C++/CLI Tracking reference limitation Effectively, C++ native references translate to native pointers in CLR speak. It is perfectly possible to have a native pointer to an object of a generic parameter type. However, as you've probably noticed by now there are a lot of things in VC++'s CLR support that are less than perfect. The limitation, that managed pointers cannot be members comes from the CLR. I asked for functionality to overcome this quite early in the alpha days, basically supporting automatic allocation of objects of a given type and forcing all function calls inline. Brandon said they had considered and dismissed something like this. IIRC they called it "stackonly" types. I doubt that there is a good solution for your problem.     - Debug Executable size I accidentally marked your post as the answer. Disregard that mail alert. Anyhoo, I can't say much above the device development, as I've never been into that. I have seen many posts on the debug exe size around these forums, though (particularily in VC++ general). I'm sure you'll be able to find more if you do a few searches. In either case, to keep the size down you should minimize the amount of dependencies. Identical comdat folding and removal of unreferences functions / data are also both turned off by default in the debug build, so you could try turning those on (in the linker's optimization section).     - Hard disk writing speed First of all, calculations can have a major impact on file IO. In your case you read from the camera, convert and then write to file. Computers do one thing at a time in order, so if some part of it takes a long time then everything after that will be delayed. In this case, the lots of calculations can refer to the format conversion. But there is another big problem in this and that is why I also suggested overlapped IO. Normal IO operations block the calling thread until they are complete, so obviously with these things put together you may not get what you want. First of all the biggest thing I would do to this program is to make it multi-threaded. There is nothing saying you have to write it as soon as it is read, so buffering the image and then writing it later is a good option. This will also make sure that the reading from the camera is done on time with no problems. I would have two threads at least, the one for reading from the camera and the one for converting and writing to disk. Using overlapped IO will also help things because you can continue converting while the file is writing. For information on files, have a good read through http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363858.aspx for CreateFile and http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365747.aspx for WriteFile. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms682453.aspx is for CreateThread which you will probably need for creating threads. Finally, yes there is a option to optimise file access for sequential access. When you create the file, the flags and attributes parameter has one flag, FILE_FLAG_SEQUENTIAL_SCAN, this will then optimise for sequential access, but this is only for read access, I think like the CFile sequential scan option too.     - Thanks Microsoft for 11 Different String Types!!! Yeah the same thing happened with CString that happened with RTTI - when MFC came out C++ standard didn't include run-time type info so Microsoft hand-rolled it. I actually am a fan of CString and think the interface is more intuitive and the class itself is more powerful than std: tring/std::wstring - except that, of course, with the std library strings you can use them with the various STL algorithms. But your average developer isn't too comfortable with the STL, in which case std: tring becomes a sort of "dumbed-down" string class that really doesn't have the power that CString has. Unless I'm targeting standard C++ I would always prefer to use CString, especially now that I can get it without MFC if need be. But I think Microsoft would have provided a CString even if std: tring had been part of the standard. Microsoft really would prefer C++ers not write standard, platform-independent code, they want us to write MS code, and who can blame them This is the secret reason why the STL is and always has been so poorly documented on MSDN. Call me paranoid. So far as BSTR. CComBSTR, _bstr_t, I understand that BSTR originated with VB as a length-prefixed string. CComBSTR and _bstr_t were invented to help make our lives as C++ programmers a little easier as nobody likes to work with raw BSTRs. But CComBSTR and _bstr_t weren't really idiot-proofed enough, IMO, and lead to errors that are hard to detect - those weird kind of COM errors where you're trying to pass a BSTR over a COM method, or return one as an out param, and always the question is, "ok, who allocates this, and who frees it " Also there are some typedefs/#defines used with BSTR that are dubious at best. According to the compiler, a BSTR is an OLESTR is a LPWSTR is a wchar_t* is an unsigned short* and this is plain wrong. I understand why it was done but a BSTR is a fundamentally different type - length-prefixed and capable of containing embedded NULLs - so it shouldn't be typedefed to a non-length-prefixed type that can't contain embedded NULLs and.. you get my point. And how about Unicode, MBCS, DBCS, ANSI... two or three versions of each string manipulation primitive, so we get strcpy, _tcscpy, wcscpy, and well of course now we have the "secure" versions. Not to mention that for years now, to compile against the single-byte versions of the generic text routines you actually define _MBCS (multibyte), and to compile against Unicode versions you #define UNICODE/_UNICODE.     - Memory Leak in C++ STL library - Visual Studio 2005 I also found the memory leak bug. It is caused by strange initialization in std::ios_base, where _Ploc is not initialized in std::ios_base's constructor but in _Init method, which is called twice in std::basic_iostream initialization: once for istream and once for ostream, and the second one replaces _Ploc pointer without deleting previously allocated locale object. I've solved it by rewriting ios_base constructor and _Init method (xiosbase, line ~500): __CLR_OR_THIS_CALL ios_base(): _Ploc(0) ... void __CLR_OR_THIS_CALL _Init() { // initialize a new ios_base if (_Ploc) _DELETE_CRT(_Ploc); ... But it works only if static runtime libraries are used. Is there any chance that Microsoft (or Dimkunware) fix it short time The std::basic_iostream class is used heavily (through boost::lexical_cast) in my programs and the memory leaks are significant!     - Getting Shortcut target path I am facing an issue when I am trying to get the target path of a shortcut file(.lnk). I am using IShellLink::GetPath() for doing this. I am having a local user say "User1". Logging in as "User1" I am creating a desktop shortcut pointing to a folder("MyFolder") inside the "My Documents". Now I am logging in as administrator and running my application and trying to retrieve the target path of this shortcut file. But I am getting the target path as "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\MyFolder", where as it should have been "C:\Documents and Settings\User1\My Documents\MyFolder". It was showing the wrong path even when I checked it manually by taking the shortcut file properties. I am using VC++ 2003 on Windows XP SP2. PDB File available? >> how to step through SP1's MSVCR80D.DLL functions I am running VC8 SP1 Pro so I don't know how much of this applies: Start by confirming that you have the source code for the crt. On my machine this is at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\crt\src You should see files like printf.c Start debugging your app and go to Debug->Windows->Modules. In the symbol status, each module has: * No symbols loaded - means you don't have the PDB * Symbols loaded (source information stripped) - means PDB has no symbols other than function names - this is what the MS symbol servers put out so you can get a nice call stack. * Symbols loaded - you have the PDB with full symbols and link to source code On my machine the PDB's for VC8 are in: C:\WINDOWS\Symbols\dll and this is where VC8 seems to look by default unless you make custom settings which will allow download of PDB's from the symbol server for other MS DLL's. So my customized "Options->Debugging->Symbols->Symbol file (.pdb) locations" are: C:\WINDOWS\Symbols\dll c:/localstore*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols I think these options are blank by default so VC8 looks at C:\WINDOWS\Symbols\dll. Note that if I wouldn't list C:\WINDOWS\Symbols\dll first, I would end up getting the VC8 PDB's from the symbol server and those have the symbols stripped so I wouldn't be able to step through the code. The _NT_SYMBOL_PATH environment variable also controls these paths. And the search order appears to be: 1. "Options->Debugging->Symbols->Symbol file (.pdb) locations" 2.     - Command Prompt Compiling with Multi... It compiles one.cpp and two.cpp, and then looks for the function anywhere in the single .obj file it generates from compiling them together. Because function() isn't defined in a class or a namespace it's a global function, so if you had a function with the exact same definition in both cpp files you would get a linker error. To be clear, both files need to be compiled, the function() declaration (which doesn't need to be in a header file, you could just put it right above where you first use function() in two.cpp, but it's more sensible to get into the practice of using headers) just tells the compiler the function exists, nothing about where or what it does. This is one reason why it's better to not use global functions (because anyone just re-using your code could end up getting errors), and if you really must, give them names that will be unique. In visual studio 2005 i can use Windows media format sdk for this purpose.How can i achieve the same thing in vc++6.Could any one suggest me
