I installed VSTO 2005 "sucessfully" according to the installer, but see no Office-related project templates or any other evidence of having installed except that I now have another uninstallable item in Add/Remove Programs control panel.

The order of installation I used was due to my learning curve and what I've been trying to accomplish on my projects. (I didn't install everything at once.)

The history was:

1. Visual Studio 2005 Professional

2. Office PIAs

3. Visual Studio Tools for Office SE

4. Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005

You see, I was doing non-office work at first, then later I learned about PIAs, then learned about VSTO but mistakenly thought that SE would include "everything included in VSTO 2005 (original) plus new features", then finally learned that VSTO 2005 SE does not include VSTO 2005 features and that I needed VSTO 2005 SE on top of plain-old VSTO 2005.

According to this msdn link: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/54ds2za4(VS.80).aspx

"You can install VSTO 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition on the same computer. If you do this, you can use all of the projects provided by VSTO 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition in the same development environment."

But I do not have the happy results described above.

I've gone through a nightmare once before trying to uninstall and reinstall the Visual Studio IDE and all the related tools (on a different development machine). I not only had to use the uninstallation tool but this didn't work completely and I had to go through registry cleaning etc. It was extremely unpleasant.

Please, please, please, tell me I don't have to unsinstall my development environment and reinstall everything again because I took the order-of-installation shown above.

Is there any way for me to move forward (meaning, without uninstall and rebuild of dev environment) to produce an environment in which I can do VSTO document and application-level development

Another thing to check is that the VSTO 2005 SE download was the design tools, and not just the runtime. They're in two places:

Design tools:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the 2007 Microsoft Office System

Runtime:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second Edition Runtime (VSTO 2005 SE) (x86)

Hi Dennis,

I used Office 2003 Professional installed on the machine involved.

I was able to successfully develop Excel application-level code with VSTO 2005 SE and VS 2005 Pro. I was able to build and run this on the machine. Excel launched and did all the cool application-level things I coded for.

Then the project shifted gears to require creation of controls on the worksheet and/or (preferably) access to the Action Pane; I guess Action Pane is aka "Task Pane". Best as I could tell, after reading a bit, I needed the document-level programming capabilities offered only by VSTO 2005 (original).

So, in this situation, I tried to install VSTO 2005 (original) on top of VSTO 2005 SE + VS 2005 Pro. (Without success.)

Hi Harry,

The VSTO 2005 SE was seeming to work fine (although limited in capability) before I discovered that I needed VSTO 2005 (original).

The VSTO 2005 original is the one that seems to do nothing for me when I installed it.

Hi,

OK, it seems weird that the steps You have taken will affect the lack of the document level templates.
I hope that MSFT's people here can give You more input.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I was trying to duplicate the scenario. I've got a few questions, so what is happening when you try to create a document level project (or is the project template missing) or do you get an error message Have you tried to repair the VSTO 2005 (This fixed on situation). When you said you installed the Office Pia's was this the redist, or just a custom Office install What operating system

I apologize for all the questions, but I'm trying to work out a repro to not only fix your issue, and avoid what ever we missed in the future.

Thanks

Eventually, I found an old machine and tried installing VSTO 2005 first (no VS 2005, no PIA's) and VSTO 2005 SE on top of it which combination and order seemed to work .. at least this might provide another data point.

Hi Roger,

Sorry now for my delay in replying. I'll try to reply to all of your questions:

It wasn't possible to create a document-level project because the project templates for VSTO 2005 were missing. I didn't compare exhaustively but .... the collection of templates "appeared" to be exactly the same as before installing VSTO 2005.

I hadn't tried a repair yet because I was so puzzled, had just finished the VSTO 2005 install, and hadn't yet come across any suggestions that doing a repair might help.

Re. the Office PIA's: I downloaded the PIAs and ran the registration batch file ( not just a Custom office install ).

The OS was XP.

You might ask, why did I ever take the order of installation that I described I'm learning my way around VSTO and Office-related development incrementally; the PIA's were among the first things I encountered; then I learned of VSTO and mistakenly thought that VSTO 2005 SE was a superset of VSTO 2005 "original". I also had Office 2007 when the goal was to develop a solution for Office 2003 users [and the thought of rolling back to Office 2003 seemed a bit daunting.] I've got years of other development experience but am finding my way around VSTO/Office and seem to find the potholes if they're there to step in.

FWIW, there does seem to be a hint of sensitivity to install-order for the tools because I found and tried a "retirement age" machine, "the one nobody wants to use," and used no VS 2005, no PIA's redist., VSTO 2005 "original" installed first, followed by VSTO 2005 SE and this combination and order seemed to work.

Thanks!

Hi Roger,

your post looks identical to the post you made above (earlier in this thread). There seems to be some odd date-ordering of the posts in this thread. I made a reply your questions a few messages back on this same thread.

Best regards!

Hi,

I had same problem as you and installing Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite SP1
help the situation (document level templates finaly appeared in the New Project window).

This SP 1 helped besides I do NOT have installed VS 2005 Team Suite.

For information, my whole installing process was like this:

-Installing VS 2005 Pro
-Installing VS 2005 Pro SP1
-Installing VS 2005 Tools for Office
and finaly what helped
-Installing VS 2005 Team Suite SP1

I hope this will help you as well.
