    - Can we do perl scripting in VSTO environment? Dear all, I did quite a lot Perl scripting in Linux platform. Recently I just came across VSTO, and realized it is very cool cross-language programming environment. But the language lists do not include Perl, I am wondering if VSTO support Perl programming ( in my particular case, it is really perl script). What I try to do is to preprocess data in Linux platform and then hand it over to Windows based software. So I do need Perl and VSTO in my whole flow. Really appreciate if anyone can help me in this matter.     - Create generic add-in for word templates Hello For now, I've found 2 way to do an add in, but it's not exactly what I want. I've done a word add-in, which is launched at each word start -> not good I've created a word template from an existing template, and I've added the code in it. -> good The fact is that I must do the same thing for 50 templates. So the only way I see for now, it's to create word templates in vsto from each of my 50 templates, to do the same modification. Actually I search a way to code it 1 time and add it easily to each template. Do you know a way to do that I've tried to do it in an empty template, and add it in "templates and add-in" in my templates, but it doesn't work.     - VSTO Excel 2007 Com Addin Doesnt work for Non Admin Users I am deploying a Excel 2007 VSTO COM Add-In using VSTO 2005 SE through .msi . It runs perfectly fine when I install in target machine with Admin Account . I have choosen the option "Install for Everyone" while installing through the setup. However, When I log off and login as a non admin user the addin is not showing up in the excel com add-in List and it is not working . Please help me as this is very urgent .     - Development machine: Which Office editions? I just need to clarify exactly what needs to be installed on the developer's computer vs. the user's computer in order to create or run specific VSTO 2005 + VSTO 2005 SE solutions. Here's what I think the developer needs: Document-level solutions require Office 2003 Professional (or better, or Word or Excel standalone products) on the developer machine. Application-level solutions require one of the same Office 2003 SKUs as doc-level, or any edition of Office 2007. This is where I'm not sure. I think you need one of the Pro-or-better SKUs only because VSTO 2005 won't install with a lesser Office edition. Is that correct This is what I think is needed for specific solutions to run on the user's computer (in addition to the other prereqs): Doc-level solutions require either one of the Office 2003 Pro-or-better products or any edition of Office 2007.     - Problem with VSTO Setup project I have created my first setup project for a VSTO add-in for Word 2007. In testing the final MSI, I am unable to complete the installation - it fails with the message: "Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\WINDOWS\system32\Files\[company]' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." Where [company] is the first word of my company's name (Note: The full company name is being used for the Manufacturer property in the setup project). There are a couple of COM DLLs being installed by my setup project, and both are set to self-register. The only thing I can come up with is that some wires are getting crossed somewhere in this process - either they are not registering, or one of them needed to be registered before the other one and that didn't happen. Does anyone have any clue as to what is happening here Why is the first word of my company's name in this path (C:\WINDOWS\system32\Files\) I have not made any reference to this location in my setup project, so I have not idea where this is coming from or what this error means. In our application we add inlineshapes to a document which we later on want to update from the hard-disk with a new generated image. We explicitly tell word to save the pictures with the document ( saveWithDocument) , and also say it must link to the file. The problem is that when we re-open the document, (and the original images are not on disk anymore) then the image is not displayed in the document. The adding of images is as followed: Code Snippet object missing = System.Reflection.     - outlook add-in causing bo:heap warning I created an add-in for Outlook 2003 using VS 2005. I built this add-in using VSTO SE as well as with the Shared-add-in template. This add-in places a button on the reply to and new email forms that can be used to send the email data to a webservice function that records it in the database and then calls the send function of Outlook. Most of the time this works great no matter which build I use but we have 3 or 4 users who get the following error from McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0 when attempting to send with the button no matter if it is the VSTO build or the other: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE: end bo:heap I had read some posts that stated there was a problem with McAfee and .Net add-ins that was supposed to be fixed with patch 6. We are up to patch 13 so I am assuming this is not the solution. Has anyone else had a problem with this Disabling the buffer overflow protection, which is the source of the problem, is not an option. We attempted to exclude the dll from the list but this didn't help. We are now attempting to exclude the redemption dll which is used also.     - Word Automation and Default Window Position Is there a way to tell Word automation object not to save the current window position when Quit() is called Basically, I'm trying to reuse Word Spellchecker in my project. So I assign the Top property of the automation object to -3000 to move it off the screen. Then set the Visible to False so it won't show up on the taskbar.     - Objects as Results of Excel UDFs I'm looking to create a two stage process to my calculations: I want to create a UDF that will generate an object, then another UDF that will reference that object. As a specific example, I want to calculate the yield of a bond. There a several pieces of static data required to do so (maturity, coupon, etc), plus some volatile data (namely price). I would like to use my first function to create a "bond object", then have my second function reference that and the price. My first thought was to have a hashtable into which I put the objects as they were created, then returned the key to the spreadsheet. The second function would then use that key to find the object it needed. However, I can't figure out any way of knowing when to remove my objects from the hashtable. Does anyone know of an elegant solution to my problem, using C#, Visual Studio 2005 and Excel 2003 I have seen this done in C++, but I'm not aware how it was implemented.     - How do I disable Windows Media Player in MS-Word Add-in I am using VSTO to create an addin for Word using C#. In my add-in I insert a video file as OLE-Object. When I double click on the inserted object, Windows Media Player starts playing my video file. Now what I want is that I wanted to lauch my own video player and disable Windows media player as long as my add-in is used. But when my add-in is disabled or removed from MS-Word, my video file (inserted) should be played by Windows media player again.     - Outlook 2003 - Email redirect on button click Due to the immediate answer and solution on my last thread, I am asking you guys again I am creating an Outlook 2003 add-in using C# and VSTO second edition. I have created a CommandBarButton, and want to redirect an email to a given email address when the button is clicked. It is of importance that the original subject, content and sender/recievers are kept. I have the button click event up and running, and I have also extracted the selected MailItem. 1) Is there framework support in the Outlook OM for redirecting a MailItem to a given email account, given my criterias above If there is no direct support for this, does anyone know a workaround Code examples are much appreciated. 2) When the mail message is redirected, I would like to mark the original message somehow, so the user easily can see that the button has been clicked. I was thinking to set a custom flag, but that could interfere routines for the users that use the normal flagging functionality. Any ideas on how to solve this Code examples 3) I also need to prevent that the same email is redirected again by deactivating the button.     - ListBox does not appear on my Form Region Hello there ! I am building an application based on Outlook 2007 and VSTO 2005 SE and I encounter an unexpected problem : an Office Listbox control placed manually on a outlook custom form through the Outlook 2007 form editor doesn't appear when the form render during the application running. But, it seems to be instanciated and to be contained correctly in the form : I can use it, add some stuff to it, but nothing never appears, although the others controls of different types work perfectly ! However, I've noticed that the listbox appears randomly under XP, never under Windows Server 2003 x64 and sometimes under Windows Vista... That behavior seems to be hazardous and I can't find a way to determine a logic and fix ou walkaround the bug ! I have to add that my form region is called thanks to an XML manifest refering to the addin where Outlook can get the form content. That form content is embeded in my project resources and return by the classical GetFormRegionStorage method implemented from the FormRegionStartup interface. Does Someone have already seen these sort of strange behavior with Outlook/Office controls If you have any idea on a way to follow my researches on this oddity, any comment would be very helpful ! There just aren't any other (more) books available for VSTO than those listed.

If you need to learn about the Office object models, then you need material centered on the individual application. For Excel, I can recommend "Professional Excel Development" by Bullen, Bovey and Green (Addision Wesley). They even have a short bit in there on .NET and VSTO.

There isn't much out there for Word written in English, but a good (if somewhat out-dated) over-view of the OM can be found in "Writing Word Macros" by S. Roman (O'Reilly).

The best place to get a discussion going about books for any particular object model is a newsgroup for the particular application (see the "Please Read First" sticky message)

Hi,

I would suggest that You look for the "Visual Studio Tools for Office using..." book by Carter and Lippert as it gives most details about the Office Object Model in one book. See if You can get a used copy of it to save some money

In general there exist a dilemma when it comes to VSTO as there exist two groups:
- Genuine Office developers who need/want .NET knowledge but not Office knowledge
- C#/VB.NET developers who need/want Office knowledge but not .NET knowledge.

If a book buyer is in the "wrong" group for a book then it's not interesting.

Except for that the high pace of developing VSTO (which is necessary) makes books on the subject obsolete in short times.

In addition to books already mentioned, also try Professional VSTO 2005, Alvin Bruney, Wiley Publishing.
