I have installed VSTO SE on top of Visual Studio 2005 team edition. I have created an excel add-in project along with the associated installer. If I build the installer project, install it, then open an excel document from outside Visual Studio the add-in appears on the Excel display as expected. However, If I run the add-in project from within Visual Studio an Excel document pops up but the add-in does NOT appear. Indeed the add-in does not even appear as a disabled add-in, infact putting break points on the add-in startup event shows that this has not NOT fired.

Anyone any ideas.

p.s I did look at setting "Trust Assemblies Location" for the porject but I do not see this property in Team Edition

Hi Ricardini,

Do you mean after installing the add-in, your addin will load if you run Excel from Start->All Programs->Microsoft Office->Excel. But if you press F5 inside the environment of Visual Studio, Excel runs without addin's loading

I reproduced the scenario above, but it works fine both I launch Excel either inside or outside Visual Studio2005.

If you restart the VS2005 and press F5 to debugg the project, does the problem still exist

Thanks

Ji

I have been working on this project for about 3 weeks. At first I could see the add-in when I ran the app in Visual Studio, and I could not see it if I ran excel from outside visual studio ( actually it was there but inactive). After sorting out the security problems I could then see the add-in from running excel directly. But then it disappeared from running it in VS. For 2 weeks now the add-in is not loaded if I run the app using F5. If I put breakpoints in the add-in code NONE of them are reached. Moreover. if I have just run the app with F5, then close it, then immediately start up Excel outside of VS the add-in NO LONGER appears (neither is it inactive, it's not been loaded full stop). I need to rerun the add-in installer before the add-in will be loaded again into excel.

Hi ricardini,

On my computer. After installing the add-in, then if I press F5 in VS2005, addin works fine, and the location description in com addin dialog change to where project locates from where I install the add in. Maybe some changes are applied to your IDE, and I can not reproduce the scenario. I recommand you to repair VSTO&VS2005 to resolve the problem.(You could firstly just repair VSTO to see if it fixs)

Thanks

Ji,

I have now tried repairing both VS2005 and VSTO but with no change to the problem.

However, I have just realised that if I go to the Office button/ options/add-ins, then select com-addins and GO, I get a popup list with the VS design time add-in checked and my add-in unchecked. If I check my add-in then hit o.k it ACTUALLY tries to load my add-in so I can debug it. Horray!! Not ideal but 100% better than before.

O.K now it works first time. ALL sorted for now. Still don't know what caused it, or what really fixed it, but thanks for the support...

Argh!! O.k it worked for a week. Then when I started it up with F5 I started to get warnings about I should disable the add-in but it still displayed for a while. Finally it disappeared. I can no longer see the add-in as active or inactive when I use visual studio, although I can still see it from outside visual studio. It does appear in the list of COM-addins, as above, but doing the above process makes no difference this time.

I will try going through the reinstall/repair process, but it is not very satisfactory.
