    - Access project connecting to SQL 2005 Most of our users are using MS Access project to work with our data in SQL Server 2005. The problem we have is that in order for them to access the tables they need to be given db_datareader and db_datawriter permission on the database. Our goal is not to give access to the tables themselves but to views. Therefore, we've created several views and placed them into a particular schema. Now we want to give access to that schema, but when we assign select, delete, insert, and update to that schema user in ms access project aren't able to view these tables. When we give them db_datareader permission they are able to see the views but in parentencies does not show the correct schema; therefore, when you try to open that view it errors out saying it doesn't exist. Also since they now have db_datareader they are also able to access the other view and tables in the database. What we are looking to do is give our Access Project users the permission to link to SQL Server 2005 views by schema only. Tag: Communication between tasks in an SSIS Package

    - Filters - Report Builder I have created a report showing both first name and last names with the following filters. Both of them are prompted parametres Last Name Contains ------------------ First Name Contains ------------------ When users enters both then we get the results back. I want the first name to be optional such that if user enters something for the first name then take it into the search criteria else show all the first names which matches the last name criteria. Example: Last Name = "SMITH", First Name = (user has not entered and NULL check box is checked). I don't get any results since this filter translates to find all the records which has the last name SMITH and First Name IS NULL), Instead I want this to be select all the records which has the last name SMITH and First Name <> EMPTY.     - How to make this query... Hi all. I have tried making this query for a while and i didn't manage to. I know it is something related to JOIN, but i didn't manage to make it work :\ I have two tables. Table1- db_stockprices Table2- db_stockSymbols db_stockprices is getting updated every day with stock daily prices. db_stockprices looks like: ID, SymbolID, Price,Date 1 1 33.21 1/1/2007 2 1 33.14 1/2/2007 3 1 34.21 1/3/2007 4 2 11.42 1/1/2007 5 2 11.73 1/2/2007 6 3 18.32 1/1/2007 7 3 19.11 1/2/2007 8 3 18.41 1/3/2007 9 4 52.44 1/1/2007 and so on for all the stocks. ID is Primary Key SymbolID is related to SymbolID in db_stockSymbols which contains all the stock information. What i am trying to do is an SQL QUERY that will delete all same SymbolID Rows if a specific INPUT date do not exist within that SymbolID. Example: If the INPUT date for the query is 1/3/2007 all rows with SymbolID "2" abd "4" will be deleted since 1/3/2007 does not exist in SymbolID "2" and "4". Moreover, the row in db_stockSymbols with SymbolID "2" and "4" will also be deleted. Is this possible within 1 SQL Query I would really appreciate a good query example for this example..     - What is the best book to start from scratch? Hi - I have tried several times to get started with SQL Server (I think I downloaded SQL Server 7 2005), but everytime I do there are so incredibly many steps to get started that I end up not going any further. This has been going on for longer than I wish to admit - but it is a very long time. Isn't there some straightforward set of instructions that I can use to get started What I want to do is to put some financial data in and then do some analysis of the data.     - problems at beginning of set up Before I get into the project that I actually need working I'm trying to get through an example or two provided by microsoft. I'm using the Flights sample from http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms160889.aspx I've downloaded the files and follow the instructions but quickly ran into trouble. I select the configuration file, enter the needed information, check the 'enable instance after it is created' box, and click okay. This takes a couple minutes but finishes without errors. I then try the register step. I enter my login information for the computer I'm using and use windows authentication. After click okay here's the error I get: Registering Instance - FlightInstance - Updating registry entries (Success) - Installing Windows Service (Error) Messages Required information could not be retrieved from the registry.     - Report connection fails with DNS name Hi, I am facing problem while setting connection string in Report Service project. Problem is when I specify DNS name instead of machine name as the Server in the connection string. When I specify DNS name in the connection string it gives error that "A connection cannot be made.Ensure that the server is running" on click of "Test Connection" Also I am not able to view reports directly through IE. I.e. http://<DNS_NAME>/Reports . When I access Reports, it prompts me to enter username/password. Even after specifying valid username, it shows me the prompt again n again. Is there some known issue with Reporting Service or with IIS setting not able to connect to a DNS name I did not face with any issue when I specified DNS name in the connection string of Analysis Service project. Did anyone encountered DNS related problem with SQL Server 2005 Reporting Service We also verified that: 1: Ping with both machine name and DNS name returns same result. 2: nslookup with both machine name and DNS name resolves to same IP. 3: Tried putting the DNS name in the hosts file.     - Secure a single SQL Server database + Make float fields encrypted Hi all, I am developing an application for a big office which uses SQL Server 2000. Apart from my database, on that server, there are two databases by other companies. The administrator also has access to server but the client only wants him to backup the database. I have two questions: 1) First of all (if it is possible) I would like to protect my own database from the other companies. I don't want them to: see the data in the tables (around 20 tables) make changes to the stored procedures (more than 100 stored procedures) be able to backup the database 2) The client will save sensitive data to the database (mainly currency amounts, salaries etc) which he wants to keep hidden. I am using float type for these fields and I would like to make the data encrypted. I could do it for nvarchar fields but changing these float to nvarchar would be time consuming. I have created an assembly to delete records in exchange (which works fine when testing it in debug mode). I then create the assembly in SQL server 2005(tried both unsafe and external access btw), and then i create a stored procedure calling the assembly. Now my error occurs when i try to execute this stored procedure in SQL Server. I get the following...     - Can all SS2000 jobs run as owner "sa"? We have several servers, each with many jobs. Some jobs run as Owner "SA", and some jobs running as various domain admin accounts. We have been told to modify all jobs to run with Owner "SA". Now, some of the jobs read or write flat files and I am a little concerned about this. Does the domain account which starts the SS2000 services determine the rights to read and write files If so, I guess changing all jobs owners to "SA" has no real risk Thanks!     - Lookup problem. I'm having a problem which seems simple enough, although I can't pinpoint the failure. The problem is that I have a lookup component that always fails for all rows if caching is enabled, but succeeds for all rows if caching is disabled (for peformance reasons I need to have caching enabled). The dataflow to which the lookup component belongs to references the table exactly once - in the failing lookup component, and the containing package does not have any other references to the table in question.     - rsreportnotready Had this problem for a week now. Unable to find a solution. I have tried almost all suggestions. 1. In the Report Properties, under execution tab, selected the option "Render this Report with the Most Recent Data" and also checked "Cache Report.. Expire after (minutes)". 2. Tried ALTER DATABASE ReportServerTempDB SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION OFF; and ALTER DATABASE ReportServer SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION OFF; 3. Applied Service Pack 1. 4. Applied Hot Fix for Service Pack 1. 5. Applied Service Pack 2. Still having the same issue. The selected report is not ready for viewing. The report is still being rendered or a report snapshot is not available. (rsReportNotReady) I am able to run the report from VISUAL STUDIO but not from the localhost/reports .     - My first Trigger_Delete field Table name: EUDF Field name: endateend When a person is terminated, the system automatically puts the current date in the endateend field and someone manually deletes it, well most of the time.     - Updating table issue Currently i am trying to get data using different queries into a destination table, the problem is that the queries put data into different columns and there are a lot of nulls inserted when the first query runs and inserts the data (4 rows ) for the first three columns, leaving the other columns having null value. What I want is to insert the data from other queries and their updation to happen from fourth column's first row and not from the fourth row of the fourth column.     - Problem with dates format passed as parameters... Hi, I am having the " classical problem " of the forums; A local date changed to the american format (normally in the development environment) which I call "Switching months with days"... well it switches both again if you press "view report" again :) The problem I'm having is that when I Navigate from one report to other, the dates get switched... Everything's been set in the locale uk date format (dd/mm/aaaa), in the operating system, in the database and in the reports... and the reports are working properly through the web interface.. the only thing that is not working properly is the Navigation which switches the date month with the day... Changing all the Reporting Services server, database server to the american format date is not an acceptable solution. Thanks for any guidance on this, as I'm pretty lost...     - Dropdown - multi-select won't show values if only one item is available I have a report that has 2 dropdowns, selecting from the first dropdown populates the second one. This works fine in the BI Studio. When I deploy this report to the 'Report Manager' and make a selection from the first dropdown, the second dropdown loads (as expected). I tried to select from the second dropdown (which has only 1 item - which is correct), the dropdown does not appear correctly - as in, I can't see that item. Since we can't attach anything here, below is the link to a screenshot of my issue: http://docs.google.com/View docid=ddd6j2xn_52c5qd5 If you look closely at the screenshot from the link above, you'll see that there is a value in the second dropdown - it just won't show completely - as if the dropdown is not rendering correctly. I can view source on the page and see that the dropdown has a value. What appears to be happening is the if only 1 item is in the second dropdown and that item is longer than the size of the dropdown, the dropdown won't render. Here is my value for the second dropdown '012 Candy Gadler David Thapero'. This is the only value in the second dropdown. - You can try 35 chars or more in the dropdown to confirm.     - SQL Server 2005 SP2 x64 crashes...LazyWriter: warning, no free buffers found. While waiting for the fax of instructions to contact MS Support, I thought I would post here (tried several times and no fax...) We get this message in the log file and then all hell breaks loose until it resets memory. The SQL Service continues working but nobody can connect for about 5 minutes and then is seems to reset itself. This has happened three times over the past two weeks. Only one time it did create the SQLDUMP files but all three occurences have practically the same entries. We are running SQL Server 2005 x64 SP2 under Windows 2003 x64 SP1. We have 4GB RAM and SQL is configured to use 2GB of it. We have a large number of databases (about 400) on this one instance that experiences this problem. The server itself is not under a tremendous load. All of the databases were recently upgraded from SQL 2000 SP4 32 bit instance.
