Hi -
I have tried several times to get started with SQL Server (I think I downloaded SQL Server 7 2005), but everytime I do there are so incredibly many steps to get started that I end up not going any further. This has been going on for longer than I wish to admit - but it is a very long time.
Isn't there some straightforward set of instructions that I can use to get started What I want to do is to put some financial data in and then do some analysis of the data.

- Comparing Large Tables One way is to simply copy the data over to a staging table. From there, you can write your joins in a SQL statement however you need -- the idea being to let the database do the hard processing for you, rather than SSIS. 'Course if you move it over to SQL 2k, you can use the lookup as well. "Tens of millions of records" isn't much in my opinion, but it certainly does depend on the record size. - any *simple* external activation examples available? The sample tries to do it correctly. That is, it must gaurantee that it will try to launch the process even under memory pressure and process failure. If it didn't, there is the danger of orphaning messages in the application queue. - My SSIS problems The fact I got problem no.2 makes me look stupid - and I don't like to look stupid - so therefore I blame the thing which made me look stupid = MS. What you need to do to solve number 2 is: save wizard output to SSIS package, change destination setting "Maximum insert commit size" to appropriate value (1mill in my case). - Filtering Problems I guess you need to provide default value for your hidden parameter so that the report manager (localhost/reports) will be able to use the value and render the report. - SQL 2005, OPENQUERY and security context switching I recently answered a similar question in this forum thread . I suspect that the reason why it is failing is the same. - Linking Oracle view to SQL Server express Which driver did you use Its long ago that I worked with Oracle linked servers, but you should use the Oracle driver which comes with the clint installation of Oracle rather than the MS one. You could also try to use an Openquery rather than the direct view as this statememt is directly executed on the Oracle system and is not further translated through the driver tier. - Secure a single SQL Server database + Make float fields encrypted The comments below are focused on SQL 2000. Security is subtaintially enhanced in SQL 2005 with many improvements in the ability to deny even seeing the table names, etc. 1. Proper use of logins, database permissions, and roles, will allow you to have multiple databases on a single server, and prevent users of databaseA from seeing or accessing data in databaseB. (Users of DatabaseA will, however, be able to list the tables, views, stored procedures, etc., on DatabaseB -just not access the definitions. They will not be able to alter the stored procedures or make SQL Backups. 2. SQL 2000 does not have internal capability to encrypt data. There are thrid party products available. There are many 'unsound' encryption suggestions floating around, but it really can't be easily done without a third party product. (SQL 2005 allows strong encryption of fields as well as tables.) With all of this in mind, a local administrator (or domain administrator) could easily take the database offline for a few minutes and make a copy. Then by attaching that copy to another server, he/she would have relatively easy access to all data. There is no simple method to protect a database from local administrators that are inclined to defeat your security. On another point, you will find, over time, that float is the wrong datatype for currency -use decimal instead, unless of course, you are dealing with amounts as large as the national debt. - Referencing a conditional column in the WHERE clause -- Possible? Unfortunately, you can't. You are creating an ALIAS for an expression, and the expression is not 'known' by that ALIAS in the 'acquisition' part of the query. Once the data is acquired, you can refer to the ALIAS in the ORDER BY because a 'derived table' has been determined. You could, however, wrap this query in another, and use the ALIAS in the outer query. That does't provide much help with filtering though... - Lookup problem. The cached Lookups are case sensitivite, while non-cached Lookups use DB collation rules to match data, this may cause different behavior. A common workaround is to force case of the data in caching SQL statement and in the incoming data (e.g. make both upper case). You might want to give a look to a similar discussion here. Also, there is a sticky here that is given as part of the "Getting started with SQL Server" forum -- the forum that you are in - that is listed as a learning resource. Also, books online for SQL server is a must have for reference.

I went through and did not find an online book for what to do after installing SQL Server. Don't I need to create a database Is there a resource for starting from there
