    - Internal Error on Query with STRTOSET I'm running into a baffling intermittent error with an MDX query. We're on 32 bit Analysis Services 2005 with SP2 applied. The problem seems to involve the first STRTOSET call - the line referencing the [Academic Period] dimension. This query SOMETIMES results in an "Internal error: An unexpected exception occured." being returned and an associated mini dump file being produced - but not always. Here are additional observations: 1. The [Academic Period].[Academic Year] hierarchy consists of three terms within each academic year. If a single term is specified in the string then no error is observed. If two terms with the same parent academic year are specified then no error is returned. If two terms with different parents are specified then an error MAY result, or it may return a perfectly valid result set. 2. The error state does seem to somehow be related to the session. At one point I had two query windows open in Management Studio with the above identical code in each, one window returning an error every time I pressed Execute and the other returning the result set. 3. The first query of a new session seems to be more likely to return an error. 4. To contradict (2), once a query starts return an error, the other sessions are more likely to return an error. I assume that 2,3 and 4 here may all be related to caching but I'm not sure how. I'm open to any/all questions or suggestions. Thanks, John Tag: printing error

And of course, there are times when you may have a negative entry_amount (for example, if you have an adjustment of depreciation). That should be counted as negative in entry_amount, but could translate to a positive amount in effective_value. Using Visual Studio 2003 and an ODBC connection to an Oracle 7 database I created a dataset with the following query: SELECT ITEM, REV,QTY FROM MYDB.CONTRACT WHERE CON_NUM = 'CONTRACT_NUMBER' All is well until I change the contract_number to a parameter using either or a named parameter. Report users will choose the parameter value from a drop down list generated by another query. Although the parameterized query will still run via a prompt dialog, the report field list disappears and many errors occur.     - SQL 2005 Won't Start after moving Model Database with Alter DB command I used the code below to move the Model database and Model log file to new SAN drive locations. After running the commands I stopped the SQL server and moved the physical files to the correct location. Now I am unable to start SQL server, I get error 17204 Could not open file:Access is denied I think the problem maybe that for FILENAME new_path I put "J:\SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data" but did not include model.mdf in the file path. How do I correct the path now that SQL service won't start I have included the log file below.     - Algorithm to populate a table with finite value combinations I need to populate a table which have 10 columns with four values. Each row should be a different combination of these four values and the columns can be null too. In other words how can I get all the different combinations for the 4 values that can be in 10 buckets. The final result column based on these values will be generated manually. For example , I have for grades (P,F, WP, WF) and I have 8 terms and two exams. 8 terms and two exams can have any of the above four values. Based on these grades and terms and exams I need to generate a table which wil be used to determine the student final status Pass/Fail. What will be the best way to do this and how is it possible.     - What DataType is best ... float, double or decimal? I'm not sure about 2005, but MS says that in 2000 'float' and 'real' are approximations. They aren't going to be exact, and when converting these values to other datatypes you can get 'unpredictable' results. I've seen this happen - and it can really do squirrelly things. I have avoided these data types, especially for financial applications, as there is so much front end user reporting using different applications (sanctioned or not) that results can get very skewed. I have even gotten differing results for the same computation - i avoid float like the plague. From BOL 2000: The float and real data types are known as approximate data types. The behavior of float and real follows the IEEE 754 specification on approximate numeric data types. Approximate numeric data types do not store the exact values specified for many numbers; they store an extremely close approximation of the value. For many applications, the tiny difference between the specified value and the stored approximation is not noticeable. At times, though, the difference becomes noticeable. Because of the approximate nature of the float and real data types, do not use these data types when exact numeric behavior is required, such as in financial applications, in operations involving rounding, or in equality checks. Instead, use the integer, decimal , money , or smallmoney data types. Avoid using float or real columns in WHERE clause search conditions, especially the = and <> operators. It is best to limit float and real columns to > or < comparisons. Tag: printing error

Just ensure that your comparison fields are trimmed appropriately before doing a comparison to decide if the record exists or not.     - SQL Server 2005 - Building a development Server After considering all my options in depth I have decided that I will upgrade my current machine. I looked into the problems I have been having and most of the slow performance seems down to IO. I have ordered an extra gig of RAM and couple of 160gb hard disks. I will add them to my machine and use one new drive for sql server data files and the other drive for log files. Hopefully this will bring adequate performance, and I will be able to continue using my development machine as a sql server.     - Sql Server Reporting Services 2005 returns 404 not found File permissions look correct to me. From IIS the virtual directory has read access (I also added Script Source and Write to be sure). The files themselves have read/write permissions for two reporting services users, and SYSTEM, Administrators, AND Users group all have full control. I added a test htm page it it loaded. Home.aspx is set as the default document under the Reports virtual directory and I tried explicitly entering home.aspx into the URL. Tag: printing error

Constraint failures cause block failure and unfortunately, cannot be handled by TRY...CATCH. Let me emphasize that I would agree with your collegue that suggested handling the issue in TRY...CATCH. I would not waste the resources for a 'double hit' with the 'IF EXISTS' possibilities. The only exception to that for me is switching between an UPDATE and an INSERT as I indicated earlier.     - Accessing the underlying sql query from the rdl file Our client uses the report builder to generate reports for collection of employees. We would like to use the employee records in this report to perform some additional processing (such as the list of employees gets assigned to a particular group). Programmatically, I can retrieve a byte stream from rs.GetReportDefinition( "\myClientEmpReport") and deserialize the stream into Report object (as define by ReportDefinition.xsd). I can then manually drill down and retrieve the SematicQuery xml from the commandText field.     - IBM DB2 as Data Source apart from downloading and installing the MS DB2 oledb adapter, If you are using IBM DB2 on AS400 iseries, you still need the iseries client software to be installed on your SSIS server system. The test program is written with sql native api and just update the image data type column, but I looked the SQL Compilations/sec and Batch Requests/sec counters in SQLServer: QL Statistics using Perfmon, both values are almost the same. It seemed whenever the stored procedure is called, SQLServer compiles it and makes execution plan again. But when I had a test without image data type, SQL Compilation/sec was 0.     - Layout question We have a report that is printed landscape and contains a main table with values. Inside this table we also want to create a "sub-report" table based on two other criteria (charges and credits), but this data is still grouped with the main table. Here is a simple schematic of the report XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX Charges XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX Credits XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX We have placed a rectangle in the last column of the main table to accomodate two other "sub-tables": one for Charges and the other for Credits. We need to keep the heighth of each row in the main table the same (without extra white space) so we cannot move the second table for Credits below the table for charges. Hi,

some of my application users doesn't have Admin Privileges to their machines. When they try to print the reports, its giving a message "Unable to load client print control".

Please help me how to solve this problem

Can you login as an admin and print a report I believe that the first time you try to print any report, it installs the print controls. Then you can log off and let the user back in. This way, the print controls would be installed for the user the next time they need to print.
