I am absolutely stumped here. I have the SQL server management studio loaded up, the trigger in question highlighted. I right click and select "Modify". I see the trigger code in a window, i make my modifications, and hit ctrl-f5. It compiles without any errors. Now I hit CTRL-F4, and it asks me to save to a file. (Now the original trigger was not saved 'as a text file' - that I can find anywheres on my hard drive. I save it anyways, and the editing window is gone.) I right click on the trigger and select "modify" and the code is back to the way it was. I just spent the last two hours trying to modify this - surely there is a way to modify a trigger

What is the error message that you received It almost sounds like you do not have permissions to modify the trigger. Also, you might try grabbing the text and making the changes in Query Analyzer instead of the tool.

The problem was that I was misinterpreting the screen. It LOOKS like you're editing the code for a trigger. But reading the code ,shows it's already got the 'ALTER TRIGGER' code written for you, and you're supposed to hit the 'execute' button when that's done. Saving the query is not necessary, unless you want a separate copy for something. And if the trigger fails during execution, you don't get an error message (maybe there was a log i could have checked somewhere, but i fixed my problem by trial and error). All in a day's work. Thanks for your help anyways!

This is supposed to be "fixed" in the next versions of SQL Server, as this was confusing for some people.
